You should try Googling it.

Next time I visit I'll blow my nose and take a picture for you wink
I don't need to google it, I am here every day, as are the others I've just asked. You're talking utter rubbish.

I come from about as rural location as you can get, I did not start sniffing and coughing like some sort of inbred hick when I moved up here.

I'd say central London is generally a lot cleaner and tidier than, say, cities like Manchester or Sheffield.
Can't argue with that. Manchester was clean once, when the Commonwealth Games were on. They gave up after everyone left. frown

The air's not too bad though.

You seem very put out by my observation of what comes out of my schnozz after a visit.

Now that is a surprise! How are the recording studios in the Highlands?

Surely Glasgow vs London is a more relevant comparison?

Very good. Unfortunately, I have to journey to London, but you don't have to journey to the Hebrides. If the Isle of Skye is so awful, maybe don't return? Just a thought. wink As I say, I spent 30 years living in London (inner for much of it), and still work there, so know it well, and know quite how filthy it is compared to the Highlands of Scotland. Some bloke throwing up in Portree doesn't come close to the filth I have (sadly) to put up with when I return to the place of my birth.
Joking aside, of course I know it's dirtier than a lot of places and some of it is disappointing.

To me, however, it's not the overriding thing that sticks out to me. In other words, the positives make up for the negatives. (I don't live in London although to many on here, I do as I'm cycleable from it - I just work in C London)

I genuinely wouldn't return to the IoS as although it was nice and clean on the whole, there wasn't enough there to draw me back. I do want to go to lots of the other isles though.

Hardly a glowing reference. They held an Olympics in Beijing too, so air quality isn't exactly top of their decision criteria...

If it was as bad as matey is suggesting they would not let people outside, let alone hold sporting events here. Its utter tripe. And as I said, I am not born and bred from here.

London can be awesome. Of course it can.

However, it does not follow that the rest of the country can't also be awesome. London's ability to be awesome does not mean other places don't have that ability.

I enjoy London in small doses now.

I get London black-snot after a couple of days but it's not a serious issue for me.

I don't like cities full stop. Towns are bad enough. Villages are bearable. Remote is where it's at wink So I am the worst person to comment on Glasgow. My posts refer to London being Awesome, rest of UK rubbish.

It's quite simple really... If you want night life, museums, entertainment, the city buzz, opportunities to meet new people, career opportunities etc... London is BY FAR the best place to be in the UK. If you want clean air, empty roads, no crime, stupidly cheap house & land prices, beautiful scenery, a sense of community, no speed cameras, low insurance, astonishing wildlife, friendly neighbours who are a mile distant, and views to die for... you do what I did and get out. smile

Horses for courses. I NEVER could have lived here when I was young. (yawn). I NEVER could live in London now (old fart... yep, sorted... you bet).

I do think he has a point. Out where I am in Hampshire there is a staggering lack of knowledge of what goes on in London, what industry is here, what diversity it offers etc....
While that may be true, so is the opposite - as highlighted by nomdujour - many londoners have a staggering lack of knowledge about outside London, the industry, diversity etc.

I actually think Southerners are worse than Northerners for lack of knowledge about London.....actually Southerners are generally more dismissive of other areas, believing the whole world revolves around the SE and they're in it.
Northerners tend to be better travelled, having been to London either for business or as a tourist at least once in their lives. I've met many people in the SE who haven't even been to London!

I like Glasgow (in as much as I can like any city) as it's small enough to get out of quickly, whilst still having a decent (albeit not London sized) slice of culture, choice of restaurants etc.

I live in the West End of Glasgow so it feel sufficiently un-city like but I can be in the town centre in 20 minutes and on the boat in Loch Lomond in an hour.

As said before, London drives me mental because of how much of an operation everything is. All involving throngs of people, public transport of traffic jams.

I've had black snot too, by the way.

I used to travel to London from Swindon to work. Absolutely hated it. 15 min journey from home to Swindon station. An hour on a packed train, then in London another half hour in a hot, smelly, sweaty tube train. By the time I got to work all I wanted to do was have a shower! But there here were people working there who regarded such a journey as perfectly normal. , they had been traveling in from Brighton every day for 20 years, 2 hours of hot sweaty traveling and they thought it was fine.
Where I'm work now it's a 12 mile drive to work, and at the end of the day I leave at 5, get in my air conditioned car and I'm home for quarter past 5, quick shower and I'm in the garden for 5.30 with a cold beer in my hand before I slap the steaks on the barbi.

Beautiful 3 bedroom detached house in our village is about £230k.
http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/prope...

Modern 2 bedroom house is about £110k, I'm 5 mins from the motorway, we have a shop, take away, school, 2 pubs, medical centre, train station, restaurants, all within walking distance.

London is an exciting place to visit, I love it, but commuting to, and working there? Never. I enjoy life here and you don't need to earn mega money and work stupid hours to live well.

I think you can almost do that in London as well. I am about 30 minutes from the centre (15 train, the rest messing about at either end) and it is probably about as close and as far as I'd want to be.

On these summer evenings, I can be walking in a huge local deer park by 6pm, quick pint by the river at 7pm, home for dinner by 8pm. Work feels like quite a long time ago by then.

On a Friday, I can stay in town seeing mates who come from other parts of London/SE and we can all get home easily, most of us until the early hours.

I wouldn't be able to do both of these things easily if I lived much closer in or further away from London.
