London , and the outskirts has gone downhill . Too much immigration , this has created ghettos.
i grew up in south London , now its a sorry run down place.
i moved out to Kent , and will move out even further once i stop commuting to london!!
Do let me know this sorry run down part of South London.

I fancy a cheap property.
i didn't say the property was cheap there.
i sold a flat in forest hill last year and could not believe the price i got,
madness.
some bits are still ok , but they are like diamonds on a lump of dog s**t.

I think it's reasonable to say zones 3 to 9 of London are average, bordering on cr*p in some places.

But zones 1 and 2 are just about the best stretch of land on Earth. Only Manhattan (and perhaps Central Paris on a good day) can rival Central London for world-class daylife, worklife, touristlife and nightlife in one single package.

What amazes me is why other major UK cities don't feel compelled to "compete" with London. None is hungry enough. They have all but given up.
eh? zones 1 & 2 are the worst places to be. Over crowded, full of arrogant people pretending that they've 'made it', overpriced, continuously ripped off, terrible transport infrastructure compare to any other city in Europe, zero community spirit, the most dangerous and crime ridden are in Europe, just for starters.
To be fair you're not going to find anything like a 'community spirit' in an inner city environment as opposed to the rural/semi rural communities in what remains of the surrounding counties. The fact is the quality of life in the inner city is always going to be crap it's just a matter of some people realising it later than others.

Agree, the suburbs are now flea pits full of ghettos and zero integrated communities. It's beyond repair and in a downward spiral. It must have one of the most rotten suburbs of any EU city.

What exactly is world-class about the worklife in London? Seems pretty much the same as work anywhere else but I have to travel by tube to get to it.

True. I spend my days strolling around Wimbledon, Richmond, Putney and surroundings, shaking my head at the terrible ghettoness of it all.

Ypou forgot South Wimbledon or is it Colliers Wood? Nice. What about Tooting Broadway? Nice. What about Streatham? Nice. What about Norbury? Nice. What about Tolworth? Nice What about Clapham? Nice. What about Brixton? Nice. What about Raynes Park? Nice. What about Crystal Palace? Nice. What about Croydon? Very nice. That lot is all south of the river, so double that or more for north ofthe river. Simply quoting a few places along the river does not represent London at all. Keep your head well buried in the sand as it sounds like you need to live in a few other countries to see what a dump London really is.

Enjoy the most dangerous and crime ridden city in Europe. Nice.

I'm guessing you've been away a while. Colliers Wood is fine, Streatham has gone silly, Raynes Park has a splendid Waitrose and the most delightful Italian deli, not a lot wrong with Clapham, but I'll give you Croydon.

I've lived on several continents.

And Wimbledon is nowhere near a river.

30 seconds of research would show that to be nonsense. London isn't the most dangerous city in the UK and is well down the Europe list.

Can't stand the place. Plus there's nothing to do there but work. Or travel to and from work. I don't even like it as a tourist.

But then I'm not one for cities anyway. I think they're basically 'wrong' as a concept. I think humans are designed to live in smaller communities (which happens naturally in cities anyway) and clumping together causes loads of problems that we then have to try and stick a plaster over - transport, housing, overcrowding etc etc.

Give me the green hills and a sea loch any day. And a phone and wifi if I absolutely must work!
Nothing to do there but work!! Are you serious?
Well, I meant that by the time you've got up in the middle of the night, forced yourself into an underground can with a bunch of stinking mouth breathers, worked all day and reversed the process to get home, the day's over!

All my pals in London do is travel. Plus flats are st and pokey for the money, or you have to live with a stranger (ugh!) unless you're on big big money, and your motorbike will be stolen within moments of you buying it.

I get why people like it of course, but none of it appeals to me. Getting out into the countryside, sailing, wakeboarding, motorbiking, playing music with my friends etc is what drives me, so will stick to Scotland thanks!

Ironically at least those two examples, especially Tolworth, were actually ruined by Surrey's local authorities firstly turning them into and then over to London. With Tolworth especially saying everything about the difference between the urban dump which it became as a part of 'South West London'.As opposed to the small rural Surrey settlement that it was before the bulldozers and developers moved in during the pre and post war years.Followed by the flight of it's pre handover Surrey residents further out into what remains of the County or elsewhere around the country,as the Londoners moved in to the urban sprawl that Surrey stupidly built for them.

Have you been to any of those places within the last 20 years? None are even remotely 'ghetto' or crime ridden. Croydon perhaps a bit ropey in parts but the rest? Not even close.

I live on the Zone 1/2 border. I don't entirely agree with you. Of course there are some truly lovely parts, great places to eat/drink etc, but normal people have normal lives that don't allow for such a lifestyle. They have to commute; find somewhere to park the car, which might not be there in the morning thanks to either; a) the scum we share this city with or; b) Nazi parking authorities. Oh, and the small matter of staggeringly high living costs.

As others have said, there are few better places to come and visit, but living here? No thanks.

Indeed - for example - according to this article from 2012, London comes in lower for homicide than many European cities (Berlin, Prage, Brussels, Amsterdam, Warsaw, Budapest) and isn't even top in the UK (Glasgow, Belfast)

YOU will

As we will build a huge wall around the place and charge you a million pounds a day each to have drinking water, electricity and food

Give him Croydon as it's not part of London.

Blackheath, Greenwich, St Johns, Lee, Brockley, Forest Hill, Chiselhurst, Beckenham etc etc.

Must explain why the houses are so cheap round here.
