Photo from the Guardian showing A LOT of shrapnel damage. It really looks like it came from the cockpit area.

As already mentioned on page 84.
Excuse me for not being on PH in the afternoon of a Wednesday when I'm at work.

It's getting quite hard to sift through all the off topic IRA stuff.

I wont let facts get in the way of an argument, but where Russia occupy for freedom, is coincidentally a mass gas route pipeline network entering and distribution to other counties. Russia has also increased the gas price to the Ukraine vastly.

Also just south east of Crimea Putin is building a billion dollar mansion.

facts such as these hold great weight as to the direction Russia is heading.

Or sending special forces in to "secure" an area...

We'd do well to stay well away from this fast emerging st-show.
I bet 50 quid no special forces would go in, too open and too much publicity and to secure a non military site is worthless from a strategic point of view.

It's all about the gas really. Western Europe relies on Russian gas that is delivered via pipelines across Ukraine. That is what they're really fighting over. Without it, we're all in for a cold winter.

The USA have no real interest in Ukraine, as the gas supply doesn't affect them. That's why they aren't being a louder voice in all this.

Anyone for fracking?
I mentioned this a long time ago but doesn't fit in with many posters fantasy posts about the cold war and other st.

The main hub of the gas network is in the area being occupied.

Meanwhile, away from the rarified world of international geopolitical speculation inhabited by some of you lot....

@CNBCWorld: BREAKING: Malaysian Airline Systems, parent firm of Malaysia Airlines, says shares have been suspended pending an announcement.
Indeed some of the international geopolitical specialisation does seem a tad excessive. I think that Malaysian Airlines have been likely to fail for some time given the tragic consequences of the downing of two big aircraft operated by them. Not unexpected. I doubt that any business could be sustained in such circumstances.
Isn't there a lot of government backing in MAS? They might change name or rebrand but it will still be the same airline.

"no evidence that Russia has any interests in moving back into those vacated areas."

OK. That's what you believe.

For the record I believe that Russia, led by Putin, will do whatever it thinks it can get away with.
for a man worth personally 70 billion he will always have power in russia whatever position he is in.

Russia has nukes, but it is no longer a Military Super power.

Only the US remains so, although China is fast catching up.
The term 'Military Super power' is not really used, but in terms of non nuclear firepower Russia is still number 2 in the world behind the USA, china is third then India

Does any of that Russian junk actually work though? I suspect much of it is very old and falling apart.
one thing those figures don't show is for a quick men on the ground situation, the figures look more favorable to Russia.

1.5 million us active military personnel against 776k Russia but

850k reserves against 2.5 million Russian

More information here quite interesting.
