The wife of Russian oligarch and former minister in Putin's govt paid 160 grand for a game of tennis with Boris and Cameron.

Yep

Far better to be reliant for funding on public sector unions which you then lavishly reward once in office.

Seems like a good idea, if only they could find as ingenious ways of helping the country.

I don't care if they do it while wearing clown pants as long as they don't have to destroy public finances paying off their funders.

Grubby little money spinner story won't go away - calls to return the money.

Will they? I doubt it.

Do you not know the origins of the LABOUR party?

And if you want to see who is also influencing policy.....

The one thing I would mention is that at least 99.999% of the people who funs the Conservatives know that they are doing so and are happy to do so.

Not something that the Labour party (who are well known for their squeaky clean fund raising aren't they!) can say about the source of their funds...

And so it turns into a Con v Lab thread again.
All parties should be open about funding.

This, however is not dignified. Smacks of J-Lo's appearance in Turkmenistan (I'm sure someone else did the same a year earlier and blamed her poor research)

Where does it stop?

Didn't say it was hidden. I mean a large charity fund raiser is hardly hidden. Nope I have no problems with the visibility of that source of Labour Party funding at all. More that if you want to be part of the union you will be funding the Labour party if you like it or not.

Not sure I can think of many instances where a failure/refusal to fund the Conservative Party could lead to a disadvantage in the workplace.

Unless you exercise your legal right to opt-out of the proportion of your subscription that would otherwise go to funding Labour. Thus maintaining all benefits of union membership apart from the warm glow of funding Ed's bunch of halfwits

It is not a secret that the unions support Labour, however, what they don't shout about is the fact they take money off members in the form of the political levy and donate it to the Labour party.

When I joined the AEEU, (which became part of Amicus and now Unite), I was pretty much press-ganged when I was an apprentice. I had no idea that I was making this payment, or that I could opt out, for several years. When I found out, I immediately wrote to my branch to get it stopped. I spoke with some of my colleagues, many of whom had been members for years, and they knew nothing about it. I typed up a letter with spaces for members to fill in the blanks, photocopied it and left one in everybody's pigeon-holes, much to the annoyance of the shop steward.

I later became a rep but always made it clear I would be politically neutral in my actions. I was staying at Esher Place while I was doing the IOSH managing safely and the General Secretary, Derek Simpson, was there at the same time for a conference. I also managed to gain his attention by distributing a few of my photocopies about in the bar. I had quite a heated exchange with him, during which I pointed out as a paid-up member, I had the right to have a voice.

If you look through the membership paperwork for details of the political levy, it is in there, but it is buried amongst the b*ll*cks. If they invited members to make a contribution to the Labour Party, it would be fine, however, their method is to keep quiet when you sign up and leave it up to you to opt out - that is if you ever realise.

Like most union bigwigs he knows a) what's good for him & b) what's good for him. You don't get there by being a tireless representative of the members and fighting their corner.
