Tesco - another fail

You have to love the doom and gloom that surround Tesco and their plumeting profits some industry experts even thought their profits would fall below £3BILLION last year!

I'm sure many businesses would be quite happy with such a rubbish set of results!

They lost their way years ago when people realised their super offers were actually rubbish offers. Far too many buy 2 for £2 or one for £1.50 type offers. They could compete with Aldi and Lidl if they wanted to by cutting their prices overnight. Be interesting to see what the new boss brings to the party.

Tesco pricing from the weekend, 6 pack Heinz Baked Beans on special reduced from £3.61 to £3, regular 4 pack £2. Digestives £1.09 buy 2 for £2 twin pack £1.89. Buy a couple of bits in there and everything else cheaper in Iceland.

I think its just incompetence or a systematic inability to track the impact on pricing on tens of thousands of SKUs when a category manager decides to spend their promotional budget on an offer.

I can't help but wonder if this is the beginning of the decline of Tesco. They can't compete with asda/Wal-Mart price (but can any), the yummy mummies have discovered they like Aldi and Lidl and sainsburys, waitrose and M&S have distinct usp's.

What I find interesting is that there is a whole generation of students growing up who only shop in Lidl and Aldi... And as the big companies know, loyalty to cheap prices and habit is hard to break. There is more at play than the present... I wonder if Tesco are taking a good long hard stare at M&S clothing, thinking could the same thing happen to them. Kids follow their parents, but the kids now like Aldi and Lidl. I think Tesco have real reason to worry for their future.

Considering that they're being pushed to build housing on their land bank I do hope so.

Is it not possible for someone to criticise someone/thing without a poster immediately saying 'if it's that easy, why don't you do it??'? We see a lot of it on PH and it's quite bizarre - you're effectively arguing the case of the person/thing but without any substance.

Pretty sure they could if the wanted to if would be one hell of a price war which I'd be happy to participate in shopping at the cheapest every week.

They are stuck in the middle at the moment and are big enough to go in whichever direction the new boss wants. Or stick it out with the current profits.

They could also max out the benefits of club card points people love something for nothing.

It's a lot of money for someone who has overseen some pretty poor performance over the last few years, however he has been with the company for nigh on 40 years so some compensation is probably deserved.

It's probably worth bearing in mind that as struggling and poor-performing as Tesco are, they are still the biggest supermarket in the country and make a profit of over 3 billion quid a year. It's hardly Ratners.

Crankedup will be along to tell you what an evil evil man the CEO is and how he should live in a hovel and be thankful for his workers and they should be walking on rose petals and bathing in fresh sows milk whilst he genuflects at their mere desire to work for his company!

Never mind the man worked his way up from the shop floor and in fact as a shelf stacker and in turn gave 40 years of his life to the company, that is irrelevant... he earns "too much" said "too much" being based on some unfathomable equation not actually capable of being articulated. That is simply the only trigger for this entire thread.

But if Tesco collapsed (it won't but...) then other supermarkets would then get all the customers. To satisfy that demand they'd need a heck of lot more staff (and stores), possibly run by companies that employ a higher number of staff per store/customers so could end up with MORE employment.

The competitors would buy the stores much like when morrisons bought out safeways
