But if Tesco collapsed (it won't but...) then other supermarkets would then get all the customers. To satisfy that demand they'd need a heck of lot more staff (and stores), possibly run by companies that employ a higher number of staff per store/customers so could end up with MORE employment.
The competitors would buy the stores much like when morrisons bought out safeways
True, and wanting a 'bad' business to fail in spite of the resultant job losses is no more or less wrong than the same firm threatening to cut jobs over their own planning cock up. Last time I checked, none of us were responsible for the ongoing employment of those unlucky enough to work for duff employers.

Wow - "Tesco another fail" and apparently 90% of people hate them. Makes you wonder how they make $3bn profit.
I'm hoping my company "fails" in such a spectacular manor biggrin

I hope your company doesn't rely on correct use of English to succeed.

Following another three years of poor and falling profits the C.E.O. has thrown in the towel. Will he be passing back all the incentives offered to turn around the mighty Titanic that is Tesco's, of course not! It used to be a relative doddle to run decent profits year on year back pre 2008, now the market is far more challenging we see the true 'worth' of so called 'top people' without whom nobody would have a job rolleyes Forward thinking long term strategies, they couldn't have done much worse.
If it is so easy to do those kind of jobs, may I enquire as to why they didn't hire you?
Why they didn't hire me you ask, odd thing to ask. However, simply to satisfy your strange curiosity sadly the answer is terminally boring. I had zero interest in working for such an organisation.
It seems a natural thing to ask, as it appears from your incisive criticism that you know where the issues are and what to do about them.

So, what should they be doing?
Incisive criticism you say! hardly, more a few broad-brush remarks that came to mind. Having said that,
impossible to be able to make any decisions regarding future business strategy that may bring the Company back to former performance levels. The outgoing C.E.O. had the benefit of three years in which to identify the major problem areas. Now if you have a wander back in my thread you may notice that I alluded to a major area ripe for forensic investigation and consideration.
We know that the Company has abandoned further new development of its hypermarket strategy, but again they seem to be following business trend, not expected of a market leader.

I think less offers but genuine ones would be a good start for tesco.
The trouble is they (or any other retailer) can't reduce the promotions because of two massive factors.
1) what they did last year
2) what their competitors do

That aside, suppliers are in the same boat. While everyone - and I do mean everyone - wants to promote less, Unilever won't stop because P&G will continue / increase and so on for every manufacturer out there.

Several years ago Asda started their "Rollback" programme, an effort have EDLP pricing (every day low price) and cut promotions.
It didn't last 5 minutes. Rollback is now a promotion mechanic and as much as you may see EDLP, you'll also see promotions on those products.

It's a result of the growth at all costs... or "growth" being the live or die by measure. Forget £3.3bn profit last year, all we care about is 10% growth next!

Good to see humour alive and well on PH, wonderfully amusing to read a post advocating the merits of a failed C.E.O. How he worked his way up from a shelf stacker to C.E.O. over a forty year period within the Company. Its admirable for such sensitivity to be openly displayed and heart warming to read such posts. Honestly I took Heppers to be a rather hard nosed character, clearly he is not, how sweet.

It's the "He's more successful than me so I must not like him" mentality.

Ultimately driven by envy.

Tesco pricing from the weekend, 6 pack Heinz Baked Beans on special reduced from £3.61 to £3, regular 4 pack £2. Digestives £1.09 buy 2 for £2 twin pack £1.89. Buy a couple of bits in there and everything else cheaper in Iceland. biggrin
Thats just dishonest. Scumbags.
How exactly is that dishonest?
As someone else stated the digestives offer is most likely across the McVitie's range, to entice people to add variety.
Actually, just checked. It's valid across 15 (FIFTEEN) different McVitie's products.

And actually, looking at the Beans prices online today 6 pack is reduced from £3.60 (60p per tin) to £3.00 (50p per tin).
The 4 pack is £2.50 (62.5p per tin)

No issue with either offer. And neither of them are "dishonest" in the slightest.

Ok, dishonest is not the right word. Disingenuous then.

Tesco appears to adopt the same approach to pricing as the rail companies to with their ticketing. Cover it in complexity and obfuscation so that it is hard for the consumer to uncover the best deal.

Yes, I am prejudiced against Tesco. I bloody hate the place. Hate the company. Hate its ethos. Hate the stores. Hate their layout.

I went to the large Tesco at Newbury the other day for the first time. A ghastly place.

I also noted that the car park also appears to have been designed by Stevie Wonder. The car park seems optimised for the purpose of creating congestion at peak times.

A truly hideous place that I will try my damnedest to avoid for the rest of my life.

Did I mention that I hate Tesco? irked

I'm no fan of Tesco but there's nothing wrong with either of those deals.
They're the same kind of promotion you'll see in any of the big retailers.

Whatever. Still hate the place. I feel comfortable in my prejudice against them. It is entirely justified when we look at the company overall. It is my prerogative and as long as the stores remain as utterly soul-destroyingly depressing as they are I will continue to vote with my wallet.

I don't really hate many things in this world. Very few, in fact. I am a laid back dude.

But there are two corporations that I would be delighted if they instantly ceased to exist: Tesco and First Great Western. Both are companies that have been managed so far with a terribly cynical attitude to their customers and their suppliers. A pox on their houses. smile

When I find my precious life ticking away in places like Tesco they are not "just a shop". They are an unnecessary source of ugliness and a lack of pleasure. They suck up time I can never get back.

Life is too short to spend time in such an unedifying retail prison.

Supermarket shopping for me is about getting in and getting out in the quickest and most efficient manner possible, while being in a pleasant environment while I have to be there. Tesco fails on all of these important criteria.

One thing I have noticed with tesco is that their prices for certain things fluctuate on a weekly basis, sometimes by as much as £1.50 (tesco fruit and fibre I'm looking at you).
Problem is that often, as they have driven out a lot of alternatives, you are stuck with it.
