That has to be a parody surely?! Even the comments think it's a joke:

This might be my favorite Guardian article ever.
The leap to the accusations of racism is extraordinary.

Good point, by the same token should steam engines really be called water vapour engines?
No, the steam is doing the work. It's only water vapour once expanded and condensed.

Love traction engines, black smoke tinged with yellow sulphur fumes following a refuel. Even got to drive one a couple of years back. The power is awesome, unstoppable. Happy days.

Nothing to do with Thomas, just thought I would mention it.

What absolute PC dross.

The Grauniad - who would have guessedrolleyes - and a US contributor, Fellow (isn't that sexist, Ms Van Slyke?) at 'The Opportunity Agenda' rolleyes (oh jeez, do they make these things up?).

The Grauniad heading (thinking of her poor three-and-a-half year old) would be more accurate like this

Thomas the Tank EngineTracy Van Slyke had to should shut the hell up to save children everywhere

Her pretty profile pic by the article - what's she really look like?
Ahh, that's what this is about.
She's after the role of the new Mrs Topham Hatt!

Edit. What the hell does that say on that banner behind her?

basically nonsense by someone who did a nonsense degree and now has a nonsense job to write complete nonsense in order to justify their existence. Oh and they're a reader of the Grauniad (probably), to top it off.

Probably gets paid more than a lot of people here for producing such critical works as well. Nice work if you can get it.
This.

laugh

Nothing to get steamed up about, but pleased his putting some of his cash into the steam heritage.

just watched the pink train episode.

the red train goes to get painted, he needs a base coat for weatherproofing, this happens to be pink. as this is curing before his red coat is applied he gets sent out on a job to pick the fat controllers daughter up as another trains broken down

along the way he meets his "mates" and colleagues, they rip the pish out of his new paint job, he gets a bit embarrassed but he is still determined to pick the bosses daughter up

she likes that he is pink, he's happy to see the kids

pretty much a story about nothing.

id be more concerned about the trains being late and constantly braking down whilst not being utilised for their full potential, this in no way shape or form represents the current rail network.....oh wait.

Judging by the caption, I suspect it is 'Netroots Nation'.

I think when women wear those neck chain things with their ID badges it can have the unfortunate effect of highlighting their breasts

What the fk is that douchebag on about?
Here's a little few snippets for you, it was a woman who brought TTTE+F to.our screens and Pierce Brosnan has narrated an episode.

I always liked the science and industry messages. That is seriously useful paint information, and I'm sure that the educational message, of primer/basecoat/zinc primer before top coat is a really useful thing for kids of a certain age to learn.

I'd be more concerned about how many kids shows don't even have characters that can speak properly.

What a load of rubbish.

I didn't need to notice her ID badge hehe

What the hell is Netroots Nation?
Oh gawd, I just looked it up.

Netroots Nation is a political convention for American progressive political activists, originally organized by readers and writers of Daily Kos, a liberal political blog. It was previously called YearlyKos.

Which here would be the Grauniad?

Typical Grauniad stuff, bordering on parody. That said, loved the 80's TTTE as a kid and have started watching them recently with my son on Netflix.....have to say that some of the stories are really dark and/or morally dubious when you revisit them!

Check this out: The Sad Story of Henry

So Henry hides in a tunnel when its raining to protect his paintwork....and as punishment they brick the tunnel up to imprison him seemingly for all eternity, leaving enough of a gap that he can be mocked and derided by passing engines. And he's paralysed and unable to whistle because 'his fire went out' And thats how the episode ends!!eek

That is some bloody dark stuff for a kid's programme...but have to say I laughed out loud at the unexpected bleakness of it! evil

And yes the whole 'dirty diesel' us and them attitude is a bit hard to find merit in, although clearly not meant as racist.
The Henry tunnel episode is a two parter, he is released!!

Story is complete bks though, and steam trains DO produce black smoke.. I was watching Sir Nigel Gresley start up the other day and it was shrouded by black smoke...which probably means its racist

If only they had shown this episode back when British leyland were still punting stuff out - might have led to a few cars being finished properly....
