Another plane down - Algerian Airlines
Discussion
It's still quite rare for commercial airliners to crash - an average of 15-20 a year?

I don't underderstand this 'oh they crash everyday - what's the big deal' attitude.

It's a lack of empathy, usually indicative of sociopathic tendencies. People come onto a thread and then post they don't care. Idiot posters bothering to point out their apparent casual disregard to the death of others is unfortunately becoming more and more common. Other people might have a multitude of reasons to be interested or saddened by a crash involving a large aircraft.
To be fair, at one end of the spectrum you have hand wringing uber empathy and at the other the "it doesn't affect me, what is the issue" crowd.
The vast majority of PH is in the middle.
I am closer to the latter than the former, personally.
I can't do anything about the crash, feel sorry for the victims families, but recognise that life is full of risk and chance.

Probably all foreigners too - so won't really matter.
Yes, probably all brown people, with a token French engineer/oil worker on board. Far less value for the news than say 3 blonde Dutch kids dying in a crash.50 French
24 from Burkina Faso
8 Lebanese
6 Algerians
5 Canadians
4 Germans
2 Luxembourg
1 Mali
1 Cameroonian
1 Ukranian
1 Romanian
1 Swiss.

Could this be to do with the Mali conflict? It appears to have come down in a rebel held area - where the French are fighting. I presume those rebels have Libyan hardware.
There were some very active storm cells in the area - hence the flight was advised to change course before they lost contact. Tragic accident once again by the comments on various media. Statistically air travel is pretty safe on average. Not that such information helps the dead or bereaved individuals involved. But all forms of transport involve risk, as does most of life itself.
It sounds to me like the sandstorm has been involved via the air controllers that there could be a better route given the storm. It makes me wonder why no messages were heard if there was a problem. In this case I hope, the accident investigators will be able to examine the site, so with good fortune at least an explanation and closure for the bereaved will be possible. That is little enough. Very sad indeed.

Yep - whilst clearly tragic for those involved - it does need to be put into context. The number of people killed on the roads annually is around 1.24 million - thats around 3400 per day
To kill that number of people in air traffic accidents - you would have to bring down 8 fully laden 747s every single day of the year.
