Micheal Portillo did a documentary a while ago where he tried to find a humane execution method. In the end it was decided that suffocating (if that's the right word) with Nitrogen is the best way to do it because it's clean, painless and as the brain is starved of oxygen the whole experience becomes quite euphoric for the victim.
Very good it is, too.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=viFl-_LL1eY
Though his findings seem doomed to failure because the US states that still use it aren't exactly keen on euphoric last moments for inmates....

Can't they just give them a massive dose of heroin? Why are they mixing and matching drugs and waiting to see what happens?
It's to do with the 8th Amendment to the American Constitution. In order to stop challenges against "cruel" methods of death under the 8th, the states that allowed executions decided to switch to lethal drugs as being "humane".
The problem is that most of these drugs are imported from abroad, often the UK and Germany. Many drug companies were not aware that their drugs were being used in executions. When they found out, they stopped exporting. There is now shortage of these drugs in the US. The Americans are now playing with their own concoctions - some which work and some which obviously don't.

If it were my daughter killed I would be very happy to insert a cannula and pump it full of poison.
Absolutely no problem whatsoever.
I would feel it my duty to avenge her death.
So you believe the death sentence should be about revenge?Absolutely no problem whatsoever.
I would feel it my duty to avenge her death.
Do you want a death sentence to be torture?

I not sure what I think or what the law should be on the death sentence. However I could not rest until my daughters murderer was dead. And as said i would happily push the button given the chance.
that's just how I feel about it now when I think about in now. I can only speculate
Heard a bit about this on the radio yesterday. Apparently the drugs they have been using for years were recently banned, as such they are having to experiment with new drugs and this is causing the issues (there was apparently another case quite recently where the prisoner took ages to die)
They were saying on the radio that the electric chair or firing squad could make a comeback

Oddly enough - there is a growing Conservative right wing backlash against the death penalty in the US. A number of Republican politicians are beginning to have problems with it - mainly on cost grounds (and some on religious grounds too).
There was a good programme on Radio 4 last week changing attitudes in the US.

Which isn't right
If we are to dispose of criminals then make it quick and painless

When the death penalty was ended here, am I right in thinking the public were in support (of the death penalty) by about 2:1?
Not sure, but with all these types of headline-grabbing public opinion issues it depends almost entirely on the way the question is worded as to what response you get.Ask the public
"Should convicted murderers face the possibility of a death penalty for their crimes?"
and the majority in a referendum would probably vote yes.
Ask the public
"Should we introduce the death penalty for convicted murderers, even though in the last X amount of years X amount of murder convictions in the United Kingdom have been found to be unsafe or have since been overturned?"
and I would expect a different outcome.

The vast majority of the public have been shown to be in support of the death penalty, however given miscarriages involving the IRA etc the goverment were never going to vote it in again. there used to be an annual vote on it but under EU law its band so there is no need.
Personally I think it has its place in very rare occasions (Lee Rigby Killers spring to mind) if I had to choose a method, hanging is less than 10 seconds, firing squad sounds quick also.

Typical PH response. God forbid there is ever a miscarriage of justice, eh?
In this case his conviction was safe. Death penalty is fine in my book where there is no doubt as to the guilt of the offender.Gassing Station | News, Politics & Economics | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
