Peace between Israel and Palestine
Discussion
Oh MX7!
Spongy is suggesting a 'solution' is one side (millions of people) just capitulates and leaves the land for another country, so your side can have it all and live in peace forever!
Sounds quite biblical.
But yeah, the Israelis should support Fatah, evacuate the West Bank of Israeli settlements (plus land to the East of that) make that the new Palestine, make sure Gazans see that as a Fatah/Israel accomplishment, undermine Hamas, invite Gazans to the new promised land in the West Bank, make Jerusalem a special status shared capital.

In many ways it would be batter if the UN simply razed Jerusalem to the ground - not a trace remaining - and then said to all parties, "Right, now sort yourselves out".
Octoposse offered a rather less dramatic solution a while back. I'd like to see Jerusalem as a UN controlled open city/mini state. Freedom for Palestine and Israel to set up their own parliaments there. Freedom for all varieties of Sky Fairy believers to worship Her there, according to their rites.
The elephant in the room (in 10 or 20 years) will be access to water.
I want to ride "The 12 Stations of The Cross" daddy !
Then do virtual graffiti on the Wailing Wall !

And you think that would work?!!! Incredible. That is exactly what they did with Gaza, and look at that. While Fatah would be better than Hamas, nothing would change. What is needed is policing, which we know Hamas and Fatah are incapable of.Israel made a mistake in '67 by not taking control of the West Bank. Had they done so, the world wouldn't even be talking about it now.
"Your side"???!!! What the fk are you talking about? I'm suggesting something that will mean that this isn't discussed for decades to come. Your suggestion is just laughable and won't resolve anything, and you don't even begin to address the Gaza Strip problem, or the fact that you've just created a new failed state where people will live in poverty for eternity.
Any solution that really is a definitive solution is going to have to be drastic. You can't say that Fatah would be better, and then rely on democracy to maintain the balance, as we saw in the 2006 election, because things do change. Hamas will get back in, or Fatah will revert back to their old ways, in which case you're back to square one.
I said that my suggestion wouldn't be popular, but if you really want peace I genuinely believe that is the only way to progress.

It is. It just isn't a solution that you like. Unfortunately for you, you can't come up with anything better.anonymous said:

And people like you haven't shut about the problem either. anonymous said:

If Israel wanted to walk away with it all, they would have kicked all the Arabs out of the West Bank, Gaza, and the Sinai. Clearly that isn't their intention, because they didn't, in fact they did the exact opposite. Your suggestion would only mean that the West Bank becomes another Gaza. It's not a viable idea on any level. It would become a failed, and possibly a rogue state, that would rely on foreign assistance and be a constant threat to Israel's security.
How does your idea contribute in a thread about creating peace in the region?

The situation in Palestine has been a significant part of the motivation of suicide attacks in the West - which is probably more effective than getting them to blow themselves up in Israel.

This is a discussion about opinion. I though that was obvious. You're not leaving one side with nothing. You are leaving the Arabs with the prospect of a genuine and peaceful future assisted by international aid and governance from Egypt and Jordan, and the Israelis the chance to live in peace.
Do you think my proposal would work? Do you think that peace could be achieved if it happened? I don't think your idea has any hope of peace at all, and I understand that you'll find my idea unsavoury. In an ideal world I wouldn't suggest something anywhere near as extreme as I have, but the thread is about how "peace might be achieved". Moving about a million really isn't that much of a sacrifice if it means that we can chalk off one of the longest running conflicts in the world.
And, just for perspective, if the West Bank extended across the Jordan, I would suggest removing all the Jews from the East of the Jordan too. As much as you'd like to think that I'm supporting Israel, the truth is that I'm suggesting a pragmatic and long term solution that uses a geographical and obvious borders to promote peace.
MX7, it's not a matter of what I find unsavoury , it's what the Palestinians would find unsavoury. Like the Jews have done they would not stop until they got that land back. Your suggestion simply would not work, it would remain a source of bad feeling and a rallying point for those with extreme desires. It would probably create more of an impetus for attacks on Israel, this time they'd be from outside what Israel thinks it's territory, how would they fight back without attacking a neighbouring country.......
They all have to have a share of what they once previously shared.
They all have to have a share of what they once previously shared.
Another point for MX7, .
Now I don't suggest this as a solution but to turn your solution on its head, if you are willing to send an entire population into exile, then why not suggest the Jews go to the U.S, a notably tolerant nation, stable, with prospects, an affinity with the Jews, Jews in a position of power.............

Israel, and almost anything else, is unsavoury to the Palestinians. The thread is about how to create a long lasting peace. anonymous said:

Bad feeling? And not that brotherly love that exhumes out of the Middle East now?!It would work. I don't like it that much and nor do you, but if you want to achieve peace that is the most expedient way of doing it.

It's not exile. The people from the West Bank lived under Jordanian rule until '67, and the same with Gaza/Egypt. They would live under the administration pre-'67, but now they are in exile? You're trying to find a nasty and emotive angle to dig from, that's obvious, but there really isn't any. It's drastic, I admit that, but you're not suggesting anything that would create peace.
As harsh as it sounds, people do need to be divided, and that's all the way from Muslims in India to Chelsea and Arsenal fans. It would be great to ask them to just get on, but it doesn't happen. India knew that in '47, and I think that the outcome in India is testament.

And your source is? As I said, Palestine is an easy peasy tag on justification for acts in the West (given the West's support for Israel), but the leap to it being the motivation is tenuous, any link to Fatah or Hamas much more so. Again, the idea that there is one unified "militant Islam" is horlicks.
I'm sorry if this doesn't fit in with your simplistic view of the world, and that I'm unable to lie down and be your willing man of straw, but deal with it. Read something a bit more intelligent than the Daily Mail.
