Straight white guy festival

I'm not sure of the legality of this? I'm keeping details vague deliberately.
A sport, popular with the LGBT community, is very open minded and inclusive of all normally.
A new team has emerged that promotes LGBT lifestyles, which is fine. But now they are recruiting for a national team and a player had expressed an interest in joining, but was been told they can't join as they are straight! I pointed out that all discrimination on the grounds of orientation is wrong and was subjected to a tirade of "it's OK because no one has been killed for being stratight", "It's only a bit of fun" etc..
If the boot was on the other foot.....

Exactly that. Discrimination has gone underground (so far as it is specific) and is as rife now as it was prior to all the agitation and ensuing legislation that rightly made it illegal. The difference is now the minority has a free reign to discriminate because quotas' demand. Does that make prejudice acceptable? Your example above calls for a non-metaphorical level playing field.A sport, popular with the LGBT community, is very open minded and inclusive of all normally.

Well as you are in Australia, given their preponderance for activities such as this, I guess you can find one locally that will float your boat
I prefer the outright homo-eroticism of the gay mardi gras rather than the hidden homo-eroticism of the type of person that thinks this is an interesting idea.More honest and less likely to hire a rent boy and beat him up out of hatred for his desires.
So I can see why you'd support the festival.

The sports club in question has come back with this:
[Sport Club] STATEMENT
[Sport Club] UK appreciates that from time to time, the question of inclusion is raised around the exclusion of non-lgbtqi people from [Sport Club] membership. What’s important to remember is that the origins of the [Sport Club] were to create a safe and supportive space for lgbtqi people to come together and celebrate their diversity. Non-lgbtqi people do not need to celebrate their diversity, as our society as a whole systematically celebrates heterosexual, cis-gendered people as the norm. Research tells us that lgbtqi people statistically find it much more difficult to engage in sports – and that includes [this sport]. Whilst most [clubs] will wonder why this is still relevant, it’s worth noting that the utopian dream of an all-accepting [sport] isn’t always the experience of lgbtqi people involved in [this sport]. Discrimination is still happening, and in UK [clubs]. This is why a ‘safe space’ is vitally important to exist for lgbtqi people.
Discrimination, by definition, is when a majority group opposes or blocks human rights for minority groups. There is no reverse-discrimination for cis-gendered, heterosexual people because we live in a cis-gendered, heterosexually-dominant society in which people are assumed to be cis-gendered and heterosexual.
Reverse discrimination is a myth, and doesn’t exist. Lgbtqi people may, as individuals, display behaviours toward cis-gendered/heterosexual people which are unacceptable. However without the systemic backing of societal institutions, this remains the actions of a few and not an ‘ism’ of the many. We live in a culture that supports and enforces cis-gender heterosexuality as the norm, and people of other sexual orientations and gender identities as ‘other’. If, as a cis-gendered, heterosexual person you feel excluded from lgbt safe spaces like the [Sport Club], it’s valid to be upset about it and want to talk about it. It is not valid to claim that it’s reverse discrimination, and certainly not valid to claim that it is discrimination on par with anything like the institutionalised and societally-sanctioned discrimination that lgbtqi people face every single day. When a cis-gendered, heterosexual person starts talking about reverse discrimination, what they’re really doing is derailing a very serious issue in society that impacts lgbtqi people in every area of their day to day lives.
[Sport Club] welcomes and encourages non-lgbtqi allies to get involved in our movement – we are overwhelmed by the support of UK [clubs] in offering time, space and resources to [play] against our teams. As in the wider world, support and progress can only really happen when we embrace each other as allies, regardless of sexuality and gender identity. [Sport Club] UK hope to continue our current positive relations with the wider UK community of lgbtqi allies and friends for many years to come.
I have made some edits in [] as I don't want this linking back to me as this is a very small sports community and I would be hounded out!
Interesting to note that they think majority groups can't be discriminated against. Maybe try telling that to black South Africans! Women weren't a minority last time I checked either.

They are using a strange and rather narrow definition of "Discrimination". The dictionary definition is rather more generic:"the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex".
It says nothing about majority or minority groups.
The government guidance on discrimination also fails to make the distinction between majority and minority groups.

Indeed - taking their definitions/stance - gender discrimination against women in the UK is a myth........women are in the majority by over 3%.Perhaps a polite reply thanking them for their letter - but highlighting this fact, may be in order. Nothing like cold hard facts to blow a tenuous position out of the water.
