The bacofoilers will presumably say that appointing someone who can obviously be objected to and whose appointment encourages cries of cover up is a cunning double bluff further to bamboozle the hapless public.

You seem a little too pleased a possible nonce might get off on a technicality, why is that?
Oh, well played, that man. In a single sentence you've judged CR, inferred that technicalities are somehow unfair (even though technicalities are what the law's about), and oh-so-subtly used innuendo as to Vipers' motives.

Just FYI, CR is no more a "possible nonce" than you are.

Beeb pays 89 quid a play...
Sorry for the late reply.

Are you saying that every time 'your' record gets played on the BBC they pay you £89?

I don't know much about the music business, but there is one person on PH (who has posted in this tread) that does and I hope he reads this and posts.

I thought you got paid by the PRS not directly from the BBC as you seem to be saying?
I assume that's me. 99% of my BBC money comes from TV, not radio, but just logged in and checked, and PRS pay pay £21.77 per minute for Radio 2 broadcasts. Just under £15 for Radio1. So if his tune is 4+ mins long on R2, that's the £89.00. That's assuming he owns 100% of the rights.

BBC will pay directly for performing on radio/TV, PRS pay the royalties (which they collect from BBC).

BBC of course sell stuff all over the world and make a shed load of money for the UK, so don't assume that is coming out of your licence fee.

HTH
Cheers, I got bored with the whole 'guess the popstar' game, I only mentioned it in passing when alluding to Cliff. I'm not ready to condemn him, or was I ready to condemn Rolf or Jimbob until the proof was there, in Cliff's case I'm not ready to condemn, it was something along the lines of 'don't judge us all the same'...

Anyway isn't it funny how people can easily doubt my statement about royalties, yet can't accept that the government could be hiding something from us?

I'd laugh, if it wasn't so damn macabre!

Cheersbeer
Get,
Yes it was you, who else! Thanks for the clarification on the fees paid by the PRS.
As I don't have a BBC licence I don't really care how much they pay but must admit that I didn't think it was that much. At least with your home and cars you are spending it in the right way!

25NA,
I must admit that I did doubt your £89 figure, no offence meant just surprised a the amount. I don't care who you are but well done for writing a song that still gives you a nice income.

'alleged nonce' would be a better term.

Apart from the fact someone has made an allegation against him and he's being connected to Elm Guest House, sure.

Funnily enough I was soda-blasting some body panels earlier in my workshop and it was played today!

It's a good game the music-biz, anyone can do it, just need a catchy rhyme and a few chords on an acoustic guitar. I'm always tryning to wrire a new one but the catchy rhyme doesn't come...yet.

btw I sometimes play in pubs and when I do our local PRS rep comes, spot-checks my set-list against the songs I have published with them and I get 89 quid each again. That is the standard fee for anyone performing one in public, as getcarter said the beeb pay per minute, damn traffic reports can cost a few quid to an artist if the track is cut short. It's a comfortable years wages every winter, the songs never get played after about end of september. Interesting stuff isn't it!

Best wishes.

This is what has surprised me. I'm currently learning guitar and couldn't believe how many great songs consist of 3 or 4 chords.

I've only had a dozen or so lessons and by using a simple formula you can string together some bar chords and have a decent tune. Not when I play it mind, the instructor makes it sound better!

A couple of things... is this why Steve Wright talks over songs? And, I have always wondered, a local radio station only has a limited playlist(including The First Picture Of Summer!), is this because they negotiate a discounted rate for the songs they play a handful of times a week? If that makes sense? smile

I was chatting with colleagues today about whether Mistletoe and Wine will get as radio much play as usual this year - and we were of the view that a) if charged it won't get played at all and b) even if not charged it won't get played so often.

and then during the course of our discussion we discovered that the song was written for a one-off tv musical The Little match Girl starring Twiggy and Roger Daltrey.

anyway...

Possibly lol! Tosser.

And, yeah, sometimes, especially with small stations.

No its because Steve Wright is a talentless idiot who has basically been doing the same fking radio show almost word for word since 1985. In fact I was going to start a thread to see if anyone else had heard his show this Tuesday because it didn't seem to play a song from beyond that year and if the BBC had put it on as a joke.

By the way, I was the one who guessed The Lotus Eaters, do I win a prize?

This is so far off-topic I,m probably gonna get a warning but...

Try C, A minor, F, G. in that order.

Unchained melody, Ernie the milkman, strange town by the Jam...and maybe a thousand more hit records...

Try it in time with the words to unchained melody first C 'oh my' Am 'love' 'my' F 'darling I've' G 'hungered for your' C 'touch' etc, it changes third go round to CFG but you'll get the idea.

Yes it works with using formulae, eg: 1/4/5 that is the first (root) fourth note in the scale (of the root eg: C) and fifth note in the C scale! All pop songs made up this way.

Simples!

Do you know who or where individual payments come from? My local station I mentioned is Jack FM! Would you know how many times they play it, and... how much money they pay you a week? smile

You have account with PRS online you can log in and see if you're owed any royalties and for what songs, it's pretty much non-specific as to play locations unless a song get used say in TV or something like that.

I'm guessing that if the song was featured in a film like 'Shallow Hal' then it would be pretty lucrative? I'm trying to think who it was I read about who had a song (reasonably obscure) used in a film and it earned more money than it ever did through sales and playlists.
