Rather ironic that all this means the biggest risk for them locally is flooding smile

If someone had said that on Family Fortunes you would have had a slight snigger.

Flooding and localised ash deposits for a large region, gas emissions really locally, but nobody lives there. If this had been happening on Mt Etna it could have been interesting.....

What's the latest?

Looking at Webcam 2 it seems like there are a few new fissures?

Tried looking earlier today but could not get a connection. Looked good last night in the low light with the fountains. But what I thought was a windy location, the 2nd cam is on a long zoom.

Does look like it though?

Aha;

http://avd.is/en/?p=161

"This morning journalists from Icelandic National Broadcasting Service (RUV), who were flying over the eruption site in Holuhraun, saw that a new fissure south of the old one had opened during the night. The new fissure is closer to the Dyngjujökull glacier. Scientists and representatives from Civil Protection are now flying over the area to collect data on the new fissure."

Does seem that nothing major is going to happen - I did see an interesting article where the earthquake pattern inside the Bardarbunga Caldera was examined. Apparently the very circular pattern of quakes under the caldera indicates a large sphere of magma on the move. Of course, this may not make it to the surface.

Ooops.

My Mrs is in a hotel near Heathrow to fly out to San Fran tomorrow. I just text her that link and sent a screen grab of the web cam feed.

She's panicking big time now...

There's nowt to be worried about with it in that state as it's in an ice-free area so no ash clouds. It's when they erupt under glaciers that causes the problems for the planes, and even then the upper winds have to be blowing in the right/wrong direction to affect the flight paths.

It's next to a glacier which is what everyone is waiting to see erupt!

Bardarbunga caldera has dropped 15m in height. Elsewhere under the ice has dropped more than 30m. Such drops have never been witnessed in Iceland since records began.

Something tells me this isn't over yet scratchchin

Nice summary of where we are at. http://m.dailykos.com/story/2014/09/06/1327748/-B-...

Twitter reports that the lava flow has crossed a major river.

Wonder what that looked like. They used water to prevent a harbour being cut off many years ago but that was a huge operation with massive pumps being used, but I suppose a puny river is no match for this?

5.4M quake less than 5km from the surface right under the caldera less than 2 hours ago.
