It's been forever since I did my GCSE geography, is the collapse of the Caldera a good thing as the magma is emptying elsewhere thus releasing pressure and the likelihood of blowing up or a bad thing (eg: Key sign of an anticipated eruption?)

Cheers in advance and thanks for the stunning images earlier as well, I was in Lanzarote last week so it's all been about volcanoes recently!
The experts are indicating that a collapse could either shut off the magma and kill the eruption, put more pressure on the dike (the sideways magma flow that's currently pouring out - so prolong that process, or the worst case is allow magma up the caldera to interact with the ice above, creating explosions and ash clouds.

Not sure but the overall trend it would seem is the floor depressing. Still trying to work it out fully. Apparently that big dip at the end timed with the quake at 8 this am at Mag 5?

Edit. Googl translate.

Misnunagilidi, means difference? It is grey so trend?

I think the grey line is instantaneous data and the red and blue lines are 30 minute and 180 minute rolling averages, which damps out the instantaneous data, smoothing those very high but short duration spikes.

edit: Just did a Google translate on the word 'miðgildi' and it means average.

Lunch time here, so a quick look around suggests the fissure eruption is dying down BUT the pressure underground is increasing. This will lead to a threat of further eruptions along the dike - which means an increased risk of under ice eruptions. Could be a very long, drawn out process (which is most likely), or something big could happen soon.

So I'm happier that my flight home on Friday will be untroubled smile

Just seen a 5.5 quake in the last hour, is that the biggest yet?

The media are calling it one of the biggest 'quakes ever recorded in Iceland.

A quick google shows 14 stronger 'quakes in the last 40 years. It's the 2nd largest 'quake of this 'event' - there was a 5.7 earlier.

Amazing video of the lava fields and rivers of molten lava, but the truly jaw dropping part is the magma erupting out of the craters from around 4.00

Friend of mine shot this last night.

Of course, you will need to log in using Facebook. (Hopefully the link works)

Have pinged him a message to ask.

He is normally a stills photographer so was surprised when he hosted a video.

He shot all bar the last three shots on this page a couple of weeks ago

Very tempted to fly out there at the moment and join him on one of his trips!

  • *Update. Heard back from him, and as I thought he was more concentrated on stills. He did say he is looking to get up in a helicopter above it again soon so I asked him to shoot more video than stills this time!
