Interesting fact: "Rifting in Bárðarbunga volcano area is about what Iceland moves in about 150 year period. This is happening all at once and it does not appear to be over."

Finally an update...

The volcano stopped subsiding yesterday and uplifted by 1.5m.

is that a good thing or a bad thing? is it al going to go pop and massively erupt now? is it magma pushing it back up again??

As Pugwash hypothesised - it most likely indicates a rise of magma.

IIRC it depends on the complexity of the geology and fault lines below.

Iceland sits atop a spreading centre in the earths crust and a hotspot. The Hawaiian island chain sits atop a hotspot too.

Mt. St Helen's is there as a result of the Juan De Fuca plate slipping beneath the North American plate.
