Don't really like Mel Brooks -- prefer Woody Allen (or even Roman Polanski).

But a truly great director, and -- when he does humour -- far funnier than Brooks. Remember the Jewish vampire in The Fearless Vampire Killers?

Meanwhile, a wobbly 48 hours for ISIS.

Caliph wounded
Lots of important ISIS arrests in Kirkuk
Centre of Baiji (major oil town) liberated
Yazidis on Mt Sinjar re-supplied
Peshmerga de-mine Zumar
Parts of south and east Kobani re-taken by YPG/YPJ/FSA/Peshmerga

Daesh are using mortars on civilian zones in Kobani and trying to sell land around Kobani. How would that work? "Wanna buy this farm, mate? Don't worry about those Kurds, this piece of paper will tell them it's yours. We'll even throw in an AK and RPG at half retail, just in case. And a free suicide vest........"

Reports are that Daesh is now throwing untrained troops at Kobani in a desperate attempt to hold ground, but that they're promptly bombed by the US.

US using Apaches based in Anbar Iraq (towards the Jordanian border) -- said to be hunting Daesh to the NW of Fallujah.

CBS has this on Baiji

Independent on Kobani and Afrin

Never heard of them. Maybe you can enlighten me. I forgot Roman Abramovic, though.

Only ones that come to mind are Walid Khalidi (historian), some of the musicians, Rawan Damen (film director).

Woody Allen keeps it in the family. Allegedly.

An Egytptian terror group has now pledged their support for ISIS. It appears the mystique surrounding these fools is still intact.

Not at all. The Egyptian military has cracked down on them but to little avail it seems.

Kurds have cut main ISIS supply route from Kobani to Raqqah, repeated attempts to re-take it. If held it makes it all but impossible for Daesh to re-supply their forces inside Kobani.

Strange stories about the US possibly re-using an old air strip of theirs in Harir (last used in 2003), in Kurdish Iraq, NE of Arbil, West of Mosul. Kurds in favour, Baghdad dead against (boots on ground, suspicions about Kurdish/US alliance), Iran doesn't seem worried. http://rudaw.net/english/kurdistan/12112014

Yet more on topic, Times of Israel has a nice piece on the Steven Sotloff foundation: http://www.timesofisrael.com/sotloff-family-establ...
