So, far from being "a very unpleasant way to wage jihad" it would appear it's their preferred role in some cases. I suppose in their minds at least they get to help the war effort but without putting themselves in the line of fire.

"According to many of the men each ISIS member has both as member number and a ‘marriage’ (nikah) number. ‘Marriage’ in this context, however, refers to the rape of each recruit before he joins the organization and the recording of these rapes for use in blackmail. For example an ISIS member named Ferhan Salim Unûf Safên (born 1994) speaks of how he was kidnapped by a number of his acquaintances in ISIS and repeatedly sexually assaulted, saying “I fainted. When I came to they told me that I was on the side of ISIS in Cezaa. They told me to join. I told them that this wasn’t possible. They did things I can’t even imagine. Things that America did not do in Abu Ghraib, that Israelis didn’t do to the Palestinians. I am truly ashamed to speak of the. There were people named Mele Newaf, Hecî Mehmûd, Silêman Kohnê, Cinêd, Ebid and three of four more people I did not know. Their faces were covered. They performed ‘nikah’ (rape) around ten times.”
Ebdulkerîm Îbrahîm Bazo claimed that to undergo ‘nikah’ was a condition of membership and that such ceremonies were carried out quasi-religiously. Bazo said that “those who did this to me said that it would help me to gain strength and moral to fight.
Another ISIS fighter, Cinêd Cemîl Silêman, said that ISIS members used recorded tapes of his rape, or ‘nikah registration,’ in order to blackmail him, reporting “Silêman Kohnê took me to the village of Çem Çêlek. Here my nikah was officiated by Hecî Newaf Mele Mehmûd. They closed my eyes and brought me to another room. Here they performed my nikah. Later Silêman left me at home. Around 15 days later they came to us and told me it was necessary for me to completely join the organization. I didn’t want to. But they had footage on them. They threatened me by saying that if I did not join they would show the footage to my family.”"

For sure, these guys are prisoners of the Kurds and may just be telling porkies to gain sympathy (or the Kurds might just be making the whole thing up).
