Rupert Wingfield-Hayes, BBC News, Tokyo

Japan has paid for the release of hostages before, most famously in 1977 when Prime Minister Takeo Fukuda agreed to pay $6m (£4m) to the Red Army Faction to free passengers aboard a hijacked Japan Airlines plane in Bangladesh. But this time will almost certainly be different.

Firstly the amount is unprecedented. No prime minister would want to be seen handing over $200m (£130m) to known terrorists; certainly not Mr Abe, who prides himself on being tough and a close ally of the US.

Also public sympathy for these two men is likely to be muted.

Kenji Goto is a well-known documentary film-maker, but many here will say he chose to go to Syria even after other hostages had been murdered.

Haruna Yukawa is likely to garner even less sympathy. He has been described as a fantasist who went to Syria to set up a military security company despite having no military background. His website shows him riding with Syrian rebels, wearing combat fatigues and carrying an assault rifle. In a video of his kidnapping posted on a jihadist website he can be heard claiming to be "half a doctor half a journalist".

The two new hostages are probably already dead anyway. They are certainly not in the middle of the desert (or wherever) given the awful blue screen effects of the video.

That big brave jihadist, that guy too ashamed or cowardly to show his face, the one who can kill a man whose hands are tied behind his back and has no experience of violence, look into hi eyes and see a little fat kid who was bullied at school. Give me 5 minutes in a locked room with a penknife and some ordinary household bleach, mind you I'm getting on so add a big strong bloke to hold the prick down

Reported this morning is how one of these PIGS faked his own death (shame it was faked!) whilst training in Syria.Apparently apprehended as he got off the ferry at Dover-using his own passport! Strange as I thought pigs were a lot smarter, obviously more so than this moron who has been filmed carrying bags of human heads.Perhaps a short questionnaire when these tts are leaving the country-Syria or Turkey? Fail-leave your passport as youll not be needing it again.Bye, forever!
If they do try to return, what happened to "refused entry in the interest of national security"? Dont bother with the excuse "they might be reformed characters" because the person would be anti West anyway.Only reason for returning would be to collect thier benfits!

What worry's me is, what's the actual security like at the docks and airports?

Let's say 2 or 3 of these oxygen thieves turned up at Dover or Harwich on the same boat, tooled up and ready to make a gun toting run for it through passport control if they were challenged. Who's gonna stop them?

Is there a side-room where armed officers sit and wait or what? Where's the back-up for your average passport checker (and our border, come to that) when it all kicks off?

I think they'd cause a right mess but be apprehended pretty quickly.

in my experience security at the tunnel for example is pretty good but I haven't seen any guns - doesn't mean they don't have them of course.

I'd be more concerned about a terrorist attack on the tunnel which would be dead bloody easy.

We're sitting ducks, imo.

Look at the hassle Moat caused and he was just wrong-'un with a shotgun.

Highly motivated nutters tooled up with machine guns would be an unimaginable mess.

Maybe these two were told to come back via Dover because of the relative ease of customs/border controls . Definitely something for the authorities to be looking at Id'e have thought. (Always assuming that such a thing still exists, that is) But then again they might be searching for the 'missing' 600, 000 illegals floating around in Britain.

Yes they did, and now begins the lengthy process of the courts, then no doubt bloody human rights, then jail-who pays for it all?
Should have siezed both passports and bought them both an air ticket back to Syria-lot of money/aggravation saved. They must have felt like super heros while there, instead of the no hopers they were here originally.
