To me, a firearm is a piece of sports equipment like a tennis racquet etc. and there's no reason that someone who won't abuse them should be prevented from having them. The problem is that it's easy for the minority of people aren't fit to possess / handle them to cause carnage if they do possess / handle them. The important thing is finding the balance between freedom and security. - I'd like to own a pistol here in the UK, not for doing harm but for target shooting etc. but I can't, "just in case".
Indeed, I had two handguns which I used for target shooting and practical pistol shooting, but not now frown

These two look like exactly the kind of people to NOT be giving guns to.
You'd give one to the guy in the middle? eek

Not only that, I'd have a chain gun fitted to his sleigh.

Happened again. This time a 2 year old took it out of his mum's bag in Walmart.
See how easy it can happen?

Is America imploding?

Apparently the mother is described as "not in the least bit irresponsible".

Despite leaving a loaded, unregistered, handgun in her child's reach.

I guess the kid decided state care was a safer option than being in the hands of this particular Darwin Award nominee.

Would the average 2 year old be able to cock the hammer on a revolver? Or disengage a safety? I know they couldn't load an auto so I'm going to make the assumption that its a small revolver.

I'm amazed any two year old would be able to pull the trigger of a standard pistol.

No, more like 24 hour news needing to fill airtime is exploding. wink Things happen all the time everywhere, more so in a large country. Lots of good things happen as well but only bad news makes the cut, therefore, the impression that things are going off the rails. I think that probably applies to everywhere in the world.

Kind of agree. We really should think of the USA as 52 countries, such is its size.

Assuming 52 States as I really can't remember......, ;-)

And again this week.

http://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2015/jan/22/flo...

The sheriff said, "It’s just one of those things that happens where everything lined up the wrong way, where we had a two-and-a-half year old that was able to take a gun, pick it up turn it around and he shot himself dead center in the middle of the chest,”

US is only 5 times the population of the UK, (316m vs. 64m)

2014 there were only 598 murders/Homicides in the UK vs. some 15,000+ in the US

How utterly tragic is that? Truly desperate stuff.

Tragic? Homicidal neglect IMO, if you must carry a gun then you must be responsible for it, it's like breeding pit bulls then leaving them with your 2 year old. I bet the sheriff wouldn't be be talking about things lining up the wrong way then.

Yes, absolutely no issues with gun control in the US, it's all media hype.

apparently she was also a nuclear scientist according to the article,so not stupid .is it a case of familiarity breeding contempt among some handgun owners ?

being clever is not protection from being careless.

the difference here is that the consequences are somewhat more devastating, unlike loosing your keys or the like.

Tragic for the wee one. Tragic also for anyone affected by it regardless.
