To me, a firearm is a piece of sports equipment like a tennis racquet etc. and there's no reason that someone who won't abuse them should be prevented from having them. The problem is that it's easy for the minority of people aren't fit to possess / handle them to cause carnage if they do possess / handle them. The important thing is finding the balance between freedom and security. - I'd like to own a pistol here in the UK, not for doing harm but for target shooting etc. but I can't, "just in case".
Indeed, I had two handguns which I used for target shooting and practical pistol shooting, but not now Happened again. This time a 2 year old took it out of his mum's bag in Walmart.
See how easy it can happen?

Apparently the mother is described as "not in the least bit irresponsible".See how easy it can happen?

Despite leaving a loaded, unregistered, handgun in her child's reach.
I guess the kid decided state care was a safer option than being in the hands of this particular Darwin Award nominee.

This and the two year old crime - I ask the question:
Is America imploding?
No, more like 24 hour news needing to fill airtime is exploding. Things happen all the time everywhere, more so in a large country. Lots of good things happen as well but only bad news makes the cut, therefore, the impression that things are going off the rails. I think that probably applies to everywhere in the world. Is America imploding?

Kind of agree. We really should think of the USA as 52 countries, such is its size. Assuming 52 States as I really can't remember......, ;-)

The sheriff said, "It’s just one of those things that happens where everything lined up the wrong way, where we had a two-and-a-half year old that was able to take a gun, pick it up turn it around and he shot himself dead center in the middle of the chest,”

2014 there were only 598 murders/Homicides in the UK vs. some 15,000+ in the US

How utterly tragic is that? Truly desperate stuff. http://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2015/jan/22/flo...

Yes, absolutely no issues with gun control in the US, it's all media hype.DoubleSix said:

apparently she was also a nuclear scientist according to the article,so not stupid .is it a case of familiarity breeding contempt among some handgun owners ?Despite leaving a loaded, unregistered, handgun in her child's reach.

being clever is not protection from being careless.the difference here is that the consequences are somewhat more devastating, unlike loosing your keys or the like.

Tragic? Homicidal neglect IMO, if you must carry a gun then you must be responsible for it, it's like breeding pit bulls then leaving them with your 2 year old. I bet the sheriff wouldn't be be talking about things lining up the wrong way then.
