I chortled also.

Regarding the main topic, it is sometimes annoying when you want to buy just one bottle of cold coke for the journey yet have to seemingly buy two to get it anywhere near its actual worth! However, I usually end up just buying 1 single 2litre bottle of Pepsi Max...

I do feel your pain, most bogof's are a con but occasionally they're awesome!

Why didn't you just buy one, if you only wanted one.

You were obviously prepared to pay whatever price one box would have cost had the offer not been on - so what difference does the offer being on actually make if you only want one box - you'll have paid the same price regardless?

Incorrect. Did you not cover business studies at school? Apparently its an 'academic' subject lick

The price of the first item has been inflated to justify the cost of the '2nd' item. As others have rightly mentioned...infrequently the price of a bogof does actually make it worth it, largely due to old/out of date stock. Until then, you're bring ripped off on the original item to make any excess profit back on the second. Hope this helps smile

Just buy one then, you complete weirdo. You're still buying the thing you went to buy for the price you would have paid for it.
Ridiculous

Yes but I would have thought that the commercial reasons for BOGOF deals was obvious.

Just get p**d off with mindless name calling on PH. We need a cull of the 'braindeads' shoot

Not sure how this reply has anything at all to do with what I posted. I wasn't commenting on the business case for these offers - merely that the OP could have simply bought the one item they went in to get in the first place.

Using your Pepsi analogy:

Tesco often have offers on this - but the price for a single bottle is always the same (around £1.98). Therefore if I go in to buy one bottle - i'll pay £1.98 regardless of whether the offer is on that week or not. The fact that I could get 2 bottles for £3 is irrelevant to the price I pay if I only want one bottle.

The argument as to whether the £1.98 price point is set to skim profit from the times when the offer is on is a separate issue.

This is how Mountain Warehouse do BOGOF offers, photo taken May 2014...

WOW, £14.99 is a bit rich for 500g of gas...

Let's just see what the previous price was, pre-BOGOF...

A total rip-off. Customer ends up paying £14.99 for two cylinders instead of £9.98 in this very special offer.

Back in the real current world as opposed to the 20 year old GNVQ world they don't do that any more so you can dry your eyes and just buy what you like, secure in the knowledge that the nasty man isn't defrauding you.

Not defrauding no. But they are inflating the price of one item to subsidize the second (usually unwanted) item.

I managed a supermarket branch up until a couple of years ago and the prices didn't change when/before multibuys came in.

I always feel short changed because imo if they can make such an offer the first item is clearly over priced.

I left Boots without buying anything and got my antihistamines from a small local chemist.
How much did you end up paying for them compared to the Boots price?

In the vast majority of cases they aren't defrauding you. They are able to price the second item cheaper because they have recovered their "fixed" costs in the sale of the first item. They will also have obtained a discount from the supplier for the sme reason (for FMCG the marginal cost will be lower as supply increases).

BOGOF et al works fine for us. The way we play the game is - if we need/want something on BOGOF we buy it. If we don't need/want we don't buy.. Cunning eh biggrin

Well, it may have been slightly more expensive but I bet the anti-histamines were fresher. Probably hand-made unlike that mass-market stuff churned out by Boots etc. wink
