Very interesting and insightful (as you would expect) piece on this by Henry Kissinger in yesterdays Sunday Times.

Assad was not right all along at all. A pro-democracy movement was suppressed with much bloodshed and the country then degenerated into civil war. This had nothing to do with foreign elements and everything to do with a regime that suppresses the majority Sunni population.
I think its fair to say that he WAS right.
Looking back at the western news it was stated that Assad was wrongly claiming terrorist invasion within Syria's borders. In actual fact terrorists WERE invading Syria.
And by the looks of it it was your money that was being used to fund them.

A side note; who is to say that democracy is the best solution for foreign cultures?
It barely works for so called 'developed western' nations.

How a regime that slaughters civilians by the thousand to stay in power, gassing many, can be considered a "stable" solution is beyond me really. The problem is that with so much blood having been shed his opponents are not likely to be any more merciful to Alawites should they achieve victory.
There were reports recently that the 'gassing' was done by the ISIS terrorists, not by Assad - can't claim that to be fact of course.... but when has that stopped our media from giving us their opinion?

I don't think anybody is going to claim that any of these regimes/groups are 'good guys' in comparison to our relatively free democratic lifestyles/cultures, but I think its become clear that the americans backed the 'wrong side', turning to the usual shoot first ask questions later approach.

AA,

Those reports were incorrect.

Assad has been the only one using various gas bombs, most recently chlorine and sulphuric acid based on the Syrian. people.
