At first I thought someone was joking when I got sent this link:

http://www.scotzine.com/2014/08/tory-mp-wants-scot...

article said:
The Scotland national side survived the threat of the Great British Olympic football team after the 2012 London Olympics, but now it seems that a Tory MP is so aghast at rebellious Scots having their own football side that in the event of a NO vote in the Scottish referendum he wants our national side to be disbanded.

Laurence Robertson, Conservative MP for Tewkesbury said: “If there is a ‘Yes’ vote then obviously Scotland will keep their own football team and the rest of the UK will presumably continue to send individual teams.

“If it’s ‘No’, the matter comes back to the table and FIFA may well get involved. I remain convinced that there should be one football team for the UK, or for what’s left of the UK after the Scottish vote.”

The polls open on September 18th and the Scottish voters will decide the future of this country. However, it seems that in the event of a NO vote, certain MPs of a Tory persuasion want us to be punished for our rebellious ways.

Of course you can no longer be hung, drawn and quartered for rebelling, but we can be threatened with the disbandment of our national team and be subjected to a Great Britain football team – given the experiences of the men’s Great British side at the London Olympics that will be one horrific experience, worse than sitting through a Scotland match managed by Craig Levein. It will also be a team bereft of Scots, Northern Irish and Welsh also [bar Gareth Bale].

Would our football fortunes be better together?? I doubt it very much Laurence.
I know Scottish football has had a shaky few years recently, but this is beyond the pale.
I'd imagine even some patriotic No voters will be up in arms about this..... Leave football (and rugby and all other sports) out of politics please.....

Is this today's "absolutely not about Scottish independence" thread?

Attention grabbing idiot (the MP I mean - not the OP).

What would he plan to do with the national teams of Northern Ireland or Wales - or the "All Ireland" Irish Rugby and Hockey teams?

Shall we try keep this to our national sporting teams.....in that case? Note he doesn't call for the disbanding of the Welsh, or N. Irish teams only Scotland... Hey Mods - do what you will, I'm past caring!!!

I thought he did.

" I remain convinced that there should be one football team for the UK, or for what’s left of the UK after the Scottish vote.”

It's not great timing, but historically it would probably have been better.

I don't know how seperate English/Welsh/Scotland teams for various sports came about but, maybe, if we'd started off playing as one country 150 years ago we'd have actually won more than one trophy in that time.

Too late now.

The guy thinks we should have a national team.

Nothing new there it has been spouted for as long as I remember.

He also wants a national team if Scotland go independent. So that would mean no english team either way the vote goes according to him. So he is consistent and nit out to get one country.

Am I missing something
. Why is the op gnashing teeth over this? If this is an attack on Scotland it's an attack on England,Wales and in too?

Do I need a parrot or am I or the op failing at comprehension? Pro scot independence seemingly trying to spin everything as an attack shocker by the looks of it.

A few years ago there was considerable pressure from the FIA to amalgamate the UK teams into one for the world cup. This was at a time when the Scots used to qualify, so before 98. There was not a lot of support from other countries for the UK stance.

Many people in Scotland probably wouldn't mind laugh

In fact I've heard some English people say the same about their side.

This would be playing into the hands of Step Ladder and his cronies at FIFA. He has been after merging the four UK nations soccer teams for years.

The existence of a separate team for Scotland has been a source of comfort to English fans for years, likewise for Rugby etc.

Scotland is the team everyone beats on the way to the next round.

No PCV genuinely thinks anything said by anyone at anytime who isn't a Scottish nationalist is an attack on Scotland and proof that we are treated as second class citizens by the rest of the UK. There are very few things he won't take offence at, the MP is clearly simply suggesting we have one national team, no reasonable person could see it any other way, but then I should know better than to suggest nationalists could be reasonable.

PCV the MP is suggesting we disband the English team, the Welsh team and the Northern Irish team as well as Scotland and have one national team, how can you possibly see that as an attack on us in Scotland?

Football.

As of August 2013, the teams have played 111 matches; England have won 46, Scotland 41, and there have been 24 draws

Surprisingly poor from England actually.

150 years ago if we had a single team for the home nations there would only be one team playing the game......

I think you're right, no other party's member would be silly enough to try sound tough over sports. I don't think that the Welsh or N. Irish would relish having their teams disbanded either. We might not be keen on sharing our currency - but we'll make you share our football team......
