In a chat a few weeks ago with a friend who spent some time in Italy, at least the north, he said that they, Italian politicians, would be concerned if Scotland did go it alone given their constitutional problems (of which I'm fairly ignorant) and would be 'reluctant' to ease their path into the EU.

Is this true? Are new EU members required to have VAT on everything?
Google it yourself.

Start with. SCOTLAND EU VAT CHILDREN CLOTHES

Read the articles. The EU has made this point very clear.

Only the UK and ROI have managed to negotiate zero rates of vat.

Prices in iScotland are going up.

Italy is another country like Spain that has separatist movements. Venice had an unofficial, non-binding referendum earlier this year with 90% voting for secession from Italy.

There is also a desire within Belgium for Wallonia to be able separate from Flanders.

Nationalist/separatist movements exist everywhere but tend to become more prominent during economic difficulties as it is so easy to say "All our problems are caused by [insert name of other people]".

Plenty more No signs up here in Inverness. Also while getting my hair cut the ladies there were saying they weren't convinced about the whole thing and that this victim mentality is ridiculous and not helping Scotland.

I walked away a little bit more happy.
Heartening to hear. Unexpected though, as I was talking with one of my wife's friends yesterday whose Daughter is campaigning for BT and she was saying they've really got their work cut out up there.

She was also surrounded by some 'Yes' supporters in her car and rocked side to side but that's another story.

Not just the Spanish either. As much as France would love the shaft the UK, they have Corsica and Brittany to worry about. The Italians have Sardinia and the threat of the mainland splitting politically north & south.

It's quite a list actually:

No, but she recognised some of them a couple of days later and had a Bobby have a word.

Well, at least that gives them time to build up massive foreign exchange reserves, set up the Groat and a central bank and show that they can make massive cuts to public spending, including the Scottish NHS, in order to meet the EU entry criteria and swap the Groat for the Euro.
I'll just leave this here...

Just saw that.

Absolutely torpedoes Salmond's claims - Scotland emphatically will not be in the EU for at least half a decade. At LEAST.

I suspect Spain won't have to - one of the smaller EU states will veto Scotland before Spain has to give an opinion, and in return they will support EU funding for some project in that state.

Yes well we don't really have our own problems up here so we tend to adopt other peoples problems. Got to have a sword to wave around, ofcoarse the fact they are likely to poke themselves sin the eye with it is neither here nor there.

Inverness has recently been voted one of the best places to live in the UK. Its one of the fastest growing cities in Europe. My house has increased in value by about £30k in the last two years. I had to laugh when it was reported in the news that it would drop by £30k after a yes vote. Cheers for that Salmond.

Might sell up, move in with the parents and then buy after the crash.

The best thing Cameron could do now is to hold a press release, say that they have been looking closely at the economics and that his official position is now wholeheartedly in favour of the Yes campaign. Adding that UK companies and institutions are vey much looking forward to serving the Scottish market. Complete with rubbing his hands together.

End. Of.

Intimidation?

Ed Miliband had to abandon planned media interviews in Edinburgh's St James Shopping Centre when he was surrounded by a "melee of pro and anti independence supporters", according to the BBC's Norman Smith.

My Brother lives up there. It's lovely.

So much so we started looking in estate agent's windows. Amazing what you can buy up there for the money.

Ironic.

Irony does seem somewhat lost on nationalists though.

Also, do they want to be ultimately ruled by Brussels, too?

Are they not just trying to cut off their nose to spite their face?

I've been casually following the 6 volumes of this thread from the start and thought I had seen all of the major discussion points. I consider myself quite a well-read outsider to this debate and was therefore shocked that I'd still missed such a fundamental point.

I suppose it's the first time I've realised how easy it is to miss something so important and am therefore assuming many voters will be basing their decision on partial information without realising.
