The 16 and 17 year old thing was very cynical; I'd wager that about 90% of them voted "Yes".

Does anyone know what percentage of the electorate they represented?
Don't have the source to hanbd but I read 70-80% of 16 & 17 year olds had planned to vote No.

It's absolutely correct that they got the vote in such a monumentous referendum.
The fact that the vote was so monumentous is a good reason why children should not have had a say.
Think you'll find that 16 and 17 year olds are deemed to be responsible adults according to Scots' law.
Can they drive a car and drink in the pub?
No, but they have legal capacity.

Sadly it would appear that certain journalists are being excluded from Salmond's press conference.
Not surprised by that, the Telegraph's coverage has been nothing short of a No campaign rather than quality journalism intended to inform its readership; I think it's been shocking.
Banning them from a press conference.

That'll sort it.

So we'll be seeing a lot more of the lady below now. Quite frankly, she was just as bad as Salmond during this campaign and should resign as well.

Gordon Brown's name is being thrust around the place like he has suddenly regained credibility from somewhere. Maybe I missed it but we're talking about the guy who led us into the worst recession in living memory, right?
It would have made no difference who were in power during the sub-prime crisis. Anyone who says so is usually an opportunist i.e. wasn't in power at the time.
just maybe someone else wouldn't have spent so much cash we didn't have in the first place though, or sell our gold reserves at pennies on the pound

blameless her isn't

But it's okay when Scottish papers choose a side?

This makes me laugh. One of the reasons that Westminster is so broken. Imagine that map represented general election results - THE PINK PARTY HAVE A MASSIVE MAJORITY AND CANNOT BE CHALLENGED!
That map is used to represent general election results.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/election2010/result...

ohh look - how can the orange party have so much land - yet the reds beat them by by 400%?

Is the problem with the map - or with the viewer?

mcbook said:
But actually, the vote was pretty close. Glad there's a parliament where everyone's vote actually counts.
Yep - it's called Westminster. The only parliament we have where everyone's vote counts (my vote for example doesn't count in the Scottish parliament - does it?)

He's spent his whole life leading up to the vote last night.

He failed; the people didn't want what he was offering.

He's done the correct thing.

Salmond is resigning following last night's defeat.

I assume Sturgeon will replace him. I don't agree with her, but she has impressed me as a very effective performer during the campaign.

If she's his successor then that's the end of the SNP's credibility. She is a waste of skin.

I'm sad that Salmond has resigned. He will be a big loss.

I believe Soupie is suggesting that Mr. Salmond favours the Heart of Midlothian club in the association game.

It is the right thing. An independent Scotland isn't going to happen on his watch. He tried and failed. Long term foundations and plans need to be put in place to achieve the SNP's aims and he is not the man to do it.

Tried to choose which Guardian journalists could be admitted too. The Guardian declined to attend.
