When I was a wee boy, I remember one day my brother climbed up a huge tree. He was perched on a branch and was threatening to jump and I remember my dad teling him that if he did then he'd break his legs and really hurt himself and he pleaded with my brother to climb down the tree to safety. That's what my brother did and in the end as soon as he was on the ground, he got a big row from my dad.

I'm reminded of that incident from the last few pages I've read here - it's gone from "stay with us, we need you" to "fk you Scotland, if you're going to show that sort of impudence we'll fk you up so you can't do it again or if you do then we'll be ready so it's not such a big deal to us".

Charming.
Why get upset when Salmond's tactics are working? If that imbecile makes it to Westminster, he'll make sure England does the job that he couldn't.

Indeed. Isn't this an understandable reaction to the unpleasant bile that gets thrown at the English from the hardcore Indy crowd? Their language on social media is very ugly and aggressive. A reaction from corners of the English side is understandable.

This will go down well.
Scottish labour will hire 1000 more nurses in Scotland no matter how many the SNP hire.
And it will be paid for by a tax in the South East of England.

.@jimmurphymp: We will fund #1000Nurses using money Scotland gets from a mansion tax across UK. 95% will be levied in the South East of UK.

JUST ANNOUNCED: Our first election pledge. We'll fund #1000nurses - over and above anything the SNP pledge.

I thought healthcare was devolved in Scotland.

This seems a very cynical ploy to win over nationalist leaning voters. The language of "we'll go and grab some cash from those greedy English down south" is divisive and ugly.

Of course, it isn't anything new. A disproportionate amount of tax is paid from the south east UK as incomes are highest there and property prices are higher too, but the language is deliberately provocative.

Is this how Scottish politics is going to be from now on?

That's bad. Terrible politics, ridiculous policy, and awful PR/marketing. A poor message and downright embarrasing for Scotland.

Don't worry though as they only have two hopes of being elected - Bob Hope and no hope.

Anyway, are 95% of the so called mansion taxes really going to be raised from SE England? I find that hard to beleive.

Taken from the Guardian.

There are just over 108,000 homes in the UK valued at more than £2m, according to the property website Zoopla. Of these, 85,461 are in London (88% of the total), and a further 14,261 are in the south-east. In Wales there are just 87 homes that would be liable for the tax. One London borough, Kensington and Chelsea, would pay about 35% of the tax in total."
A quick look on Zoopla shows a whole 41 properties worth over £2 million in Scotland and it appears several are listed more than once with multiple agents.

Agreed, this will only serve to further fuel resentment across the UK. Sad that this is what some feel is necessary to gain votes in Scotland. This is a slippery slope.

It may well in the long term get the SNPO what they want. Language like this is simply designed to wind up the English. Post referendum, I don't doubt there are some people who didn't really think about how Scotland is subsidised by English taxes. Now they know, some won't like it. The genie is out. A portion of the UK population ( who knows how many?) will start to think of the Scots as sponging on their taxes and this could define things in the future.

Its starting to irritate me somewhat.

I've gone from being a unionist in the early volumes to not caring if Scotland leaves and mildly annoyed at the language that's aimed squarely at the English.

Jims tweet being a prime example.

According to Scottish gov figures there were only 123 properties sold in Scotland last year that exceeded £1 million with an average price of £1.3 yet they expect/demand 9 or 10% of all taxes raised nationally. Its the sense entitlement combined with constant criticism and insults that's wearing thin with me rather than the sums of money involved.

I don't think it was designed to wind up the English as it was designed for Scottish eyes.

Labour are struggling in Scotland. They're making a big deal of working autonomously and outwith the rule/control of UK Labour Party which is a break from the past, and I suspect this line is trying to jump on the back of the recent nationalist-driven feelings of self-worth rather than anything else.

It also flies in the face of the argument of self-sufficiency. Just sayin'...
