I had to check I hadn't woken up in the 17th century with all this talk of Darien.

For heavens sake, that was over three hundred years ago! A hell of a lot has happened since then. Good, bad and indifferent.

Remind me which City was regarded as the 2nd city of the Empire during the 19th Century?

Or where Scots still living in caves back then?
Wow, you sound almost proud of the empire in that post.

Course it would have been the number 1 city if it weren't for the English.
It's purely in reference to the "only 30 years financial contribution" pish posted earlier

Except your assertion is pish too...

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_city_of_the_...

Seems very clear the Second city of the Empire was Liverpool.

Bless. Even your capital ranks lower than a dockyard.

Seems very unclear from that article as it also contains the following excerpt:

"By the early 19th century, Glasgow was frequently referred to as the second city;[10] and during much of the 20th century it had a population of over one million, larger than that of Birmingham until the 1951 census. For example, the Official Census population for Glasgow was 0.784 million in April 1911; 1.034 million in April 1921; 1.088 million in April 1931 and 1.090 million in April 1951"

Maybe read the entire article rather than the parts which support your supposition.

The title Second City of Empire or Second City of the British Empire was claimed by a number of cities in the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries. Commercial trading city Liverpool was regarded as holding this title with its massive port, merchant fleet and world-wide trading links.[5][16][17] Liverpool was constantly referred to as the New York of Europe.[18] Others included Dublin,[19] Glasgow (which continues to use the title as a marketing slogan),[20][21] and (outside the UK) Kolkata (known as Calcutta during the British Empire)[22] and Philadelphia.[23]

What a lot of nonsense.

Anyway, in a more recent survey (2015) Edinburgh was voted the fourth most beautiful city in the world behind Paris, Florence and Rome and ahead of every other city in the UK.

LMAO at the impotent wailing of the demented regarding Scotland only contributing to the "Union" over the past 30 years (I dare them to say that to the face of any of the families who lost relatives in the 2 Great Wars) and the digging up of Darian, which was initially a joint venture between the English, Scots & Dutch until the vested interests of the East India Company allied with a complicit English Parliament scuppered the initial proposal

The Darian episode illustrates how duplicitous and cowardly the English where then and in the future, bottled it from fighting the Spanish, English Parliament blocking Scotland from trade routes/communications etc and bribing the Scottish Nobles as they had no appetite to enter into another war with Scotland

The great thing is this bitterness from the BritNats is the main reason why the Union will ultimately fail and the vestiges of a once great empire will be laid bare for all to see and all that will be left is England's green and pleasant land
Fiscally speaking, we've spent more than we've taxed in the last 30 years. Did you know that?

Incorrect, simoid.

We don't know exactly what's been taxed because taxation information isn't accurately available regionally.

Exactly what I thought about the so-called second city point.

I did read the whole article. The extract was clear in naming Liverpool the second city of the empire, with others claiming it. Your point about Glasgow is in relation to population size, in which case neither Glasgow nor London would have been anywhere in Empire terms...

Then later there's an additional paragraph, again giving precedence to Liverpool, although stating that Glasgow still uses it in advertising.

Just using the best available figures. Do you agree they're likely to be within a few percentage points?

What's strange about a rivalry between two neighbouring nations?

Happens the world over.

So Scotland tries to put one over on the English. Scotland's plan was crap to start with. England acts to protect it's interests. Scottish plan fails. Nationalists blame the English for not giving Scotland help. rofl
