It's because of the general snobbishness of PH'ers. It's classed as a rag you wouldn't wipe your arse on by PH'ers yet everyone on PH appears to read it and they all feel it necessary to apologise for posting links to it.
Because if the postee doesn't apologise for the link then they look like a brainless loon. If, however they add a simple disclaimer at the start of the post (or at least edit it in before the forum posted addendum time kicks in ;-)) they instantly become 2kool4skool & a PH DM hipster.

Why does everyone apologise for reading the mail ? What's so hard about not reading it if you don't like it ? I don't particularly like it , but I don't feel the need to say sorry if I am and link a story.
I had always assumed that the apologists had heard of a story they wanted to post about, but the only place they could find it online and not behind a Paywall (Times, Telegraph etc) was the Daily Wail site. Am I being overly generous, do you think?

Okay...Because in that particular example, it's an appalling story about a couple murdered in Thailand. However, the Mail presents it such that the young man's death is diminished, firstly by not including his picture & then again in the strap line by referring to him as a friend. As in 'Holidaymaker Hannah Witheridge and a friend...'

When you compare the way it is reported compared to other mainstream media outlets, f'rinstance:

The Telegraph.

Sky news

The Grauniad

The implication is that boys don't sell papers, even tragically murdered ones, so he's excised from the story, even though he IS the story. The further implication is the reader is unwittingly complicit in the Mail's agenda. I could go on & on, the paper is littered with this stuff every single day, it's a combination of pandering to base motives & selling papers & the same reason they dined out on Diana for a decade & continue to do so with immigrants, house prices & the feckless poor.

So, call me a snob by all means, wink but I can make a cogent argument all day long to justify why I seriously dislike the Daily Mail.

Interesting. Playing devils advocate (on hard mode as I hate the DM in general) - but could it be the case that the boys name wasn't released when it went to press?

Edit to add - Seems a couple other papers (Times/Mirror) managed to give both equal footing.

The Express, Star and Sun showed both but with the girl taking prominence and the DM dropped him from the front page all together.

All other papers didn't feature either of their photo on the front page.

That's actually pretty depressing all around. Pretty blond girl murdered by foreigners is a compelling story I guess.

Maybe, maybe not, although I suspect I know the answer. I use it only as the one that struck me most recently, I could list dozens of similar examples, anyone could.

The Mail isn't stupid, Dacre knows exactly what he's doing & he's very good at it. However, the subtle & not so subtle twisting of the news agenda to suit their commercial ends & it is all about that, leaves enough of a bad taste in the mouth for some of us to develop strong opinions on it.

Oh I agree entirely. I don't think the DM are unique in it but I find they have a particularly nasty and shameless streak about them.

I didn't want to do another wtf click bait thread shall this be the repository for wtf stories?

Trust me your flabber will be gasted. No really.

Teachers aid used learning difficulty girl as bait to catch kids known as sex pests. Girl gets raped.

The Justice Department on Wednesday filed a brief in the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals castigating officials at Sparkman Middle for their response in January 2010 to the then-14-year-old special needs student's complaint that she was being sexually harassed by an older male student.

Teacher's aide June Simpson talked the girl into going into a boys' bathroom with the 16-year-old suspect -- under the ruse of agreeing to sex -- so administrators could "catch him in the act." When no adults immediately followed the teens into the bathroom, the girl was sodomized.

Seems that Thailand's "Ministry of Information" has blocked the entire Daily Mail website. How will we ever keep up the the house prices of murderes and benefit scroungers now?!
