I have already predicted this happening in the UK. I stand by that statement.

You can quote this when it happens.

It's only a matter of time. Think how easy it has been to smuggle people into the country in containers, one container in Tilbury and another in Somerset in August alone.
All it will take is one container full of weapons bound for UK extremists and it all kicks off in a spectacular fashion.
There are an estimated 500 who have traveled abroad to fight, there could be many more who stayed.
I would imagine the first target will be Bluewater, The bull ring or westfield in a Nairobi mall style attack. Don't have nightmares.

Exactly this. There are some very unpleasant types around in the UK who are actively looking for an opportunity like this. One of them will slip through the security ring sooner or later.

I'm struggling to see how something like this WON'T happen. Particularly the grabbing a random of the street and attempting to behead him/her. High shock / publicity value, and easier to achieve than planning a 9/11 "spectacular".

The precedent is already set with the Lee Rigsby murder.

Im more surprised it hasnt happened already here, post Lee Rigby.

All it takes is a few nutters tooled up with knives/swords (readily available to all) to run through a shopping centre and cause mayhem and get themselves in the news.

Sadly, only a matter of time....

...and when it does happen, will people start arming themselves?

It's different with bombs and suchlike, as logic says being tooled up will make zero difference. However, if we start to see street attacks with knives etc, conventional logic would suggest you'd be as well giving yourself a fighting chance with a weapon - in the absence of circumstances allowing you to run.

It doesn't take much to cause localised chaos (is that too strong a word?) in this country.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-24001785
7 hour delays and 9 mile tailbacks because a mentally ill man makes a bomb threat before jumping off a bus.

Now imagine the chaos if a few white vans were abandoned at the ports, channel tunnel, Dartford crossing, Blackwall tunnel etc...

The key thing to remember is that there doesn't even have to be any explosive or dangerous substances present, just a guy jumping out of a van in the middle of the tunnel shouting allahu akbar and we're terrorised, the transport system could be shut down for hours.
I don't know what the solution is to that, but I hope the security services have at least thought about that possibility and how to deal with it.

Very much this.

Imagine the impact of random nice folks being bundled off the streets in a van, and then appearing with no head on the six o'clock news.

It's coming - and there's fook all we can do.

You'd need a pretty sizeable weapon to given yourself a chance against a machete or Japanese sword! I'd still fancy myself with a decent pair of Air Max.

re the Air Max - aye, as would I!

Logically you're correct about the type of weapon required, but that won't stop people arming themselves to feel better.

Burying your head in the sand isn't going to make these scenarios any less likely to happen in the UK.

Well this should give Australian politicians enough local support now for their troops to take action in Iraq/Syria. Nice timing by the Aussie Jihadis.

I'm not so sure, there seemed to be a huge change about 20 years ago.
