That's not necessarily true. Listen to his speech: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-29277527.

They should have an election now. The SNP have failed, they stand for independence and the Scots have rejected that by a comfortable margin. The Scots need a new governemnt who can lead the majority of Scots who favour the union.

Resignation is appropriate and even, dare I say, principled.

I agree, although I would suggest his principals had nothing to do with it!

Perhaps you are correct, however how the millions who had supported him with their votes will feel?
He is stepping down not only as a First Minister but as a leader of SNP as well... this is a big slap in the face for everyone who was behind him.

Is it? Salmond sought to deliver full independence. On that he failed (although he obtained Devo Max). Resigning seems to me to have a certain honour in it.

It's an admission of defeat and by doing so he comes across better than those who try to cling to a position even when they shouldn't.

We shall wait and see. Many of the "benefit" voters will feel that he let them down.
However we are only expressing personal views here.

I agree

If the vote went the other way would there be 3 resignations from Cameron,Miliband and the other one?

Breadvan.
Can I ask about that 'The Vow' pledge
If anyone voted NO on the strength of that pledge and now it appears it will be broken. WHo is to blame? The voter, the papers o those that made the pledge

I think he was going either way. He didn't have Scotland's interests at heart just his ego. Even a yes vote he would of stepped down let Scotland crash blame it on Westminster and still be seen as a hero.

I would tend to say that the person who makes a pledge and breaks it is the baddie!

Agree, and he fought a good fight.

45% (for it was about him too) is more than our PM enjoys.
