I'm not surprised their profits are plummeting.

I've recently stopped shopping there despite it being the closest supermarket (bar a small Waitrose). The reason mainly being their awful doughnuts. smile

Ok, it's not just the doughnuts, it's that in our local store they've done away with the Bakery and replaced it with some poncey fau bakery shop where everything seems to be at least 1 day old, if not more. Also, all the branded bread in shop is not as fresh as anywhere else I buy it, and so often basic shopping staples are out of stock.

So I've finally given up and started to go to the big Savacentre in the other direction. They do the bestest doughnuts in town! laugh

I detest Tesco from a customer POV and I detest their management practices toward employees (family related used to work in one of their supermarkets)
We usually shop at Asda but last week decided to have a nose around Tesco superstore, still in our home town. Spent just a few quid in Tesco but what struck me was how empty the store was, hardly any customers. Mid afternoon weekday and not at all busy, telling.
Meanwhile Asda plods on, its not a bad store but my pet hate is the way staff almost block so many isles with their shelf replenishment carriers. Bad enough having to go shopping but having to dodge staff trolleys and carriers makes it worse. I must be getting old and definitely moany.

Few years ago we shopped in Morrisons, half way through our shop list and the in store alarm starts to make a racket - wooop woooop---wooop wooop. What the heck is that, shoppers stood around looking at each other whilst staff scurried for the exit door. Ah its a fire alarm! We suggested to the store manager, after the event, that a verbal direction should be included within the fire alarm system. As for the fire, kitchen staff burnt some toast.

LOL its the other way round in watford. Tesco packed until about 7pm, asda half full and Sainsbury empty. A bonus is sainsbury have costco sized parking spaces.

So a fine from the so called regulator, I hope they're paying compensation to shareholders.

Considering they have supposedly been cutting costs I'm finding them quite expensive compared to asda.

None of the big 4 will ever compete with the discounters unless they strip out the huge cost bases they have, the size of their overheads is quite eye watering.

They recently built a new 24hr Tesco which is just by work, so really handy for me to drop in quickly in mornings - seldom busy at that time and plenty of easy parking. It does actually fill out later in the day and at weekends, so that store, at least, seems to be working.

Doughnuts aside, I popped into the big 24hr branch by Gatwick at lunchtime yesterday. I haven't been in a big Tesco for over three years and it was rammed... except for the faux bakery where I was the only customer.

I bought a couple of faux "artisan bread" products. I asked the assistant where the artisan was and received a shrug... presumably they were round the back, working on the computer controlled electric artisan bread ovens.

That said, the bread was truly excellent. I formed the impression Tesco were really trying hard to raise standards but last night when I opened the cottage pie I'd bought I remembered why I stopped using them; an inch of mashed potato sat on a miserable quarter of an inch of thin mince and gravy. They need to get their bean-counters to let go a bit.

“Former Tesco directors Chris Bush and John Scouler have been cleared of false accounting at Southwark crown court.

The court case related to an alleged hole in Tesco’s accounts revealed in September 2014 when the company told the stock market it had overestimated profits by about £250m. The announcement wiped £1.5bn off the value of Tesco in one day.

The case’s failure represents an embarrassment for the Serious Fraud Office which is thought to have spent more than £10m, including investigation and legal fees covering two lengthy trials, pursuing the former Tesco senior managers.”
