Micheal Gove suggests we should all fork out for a new yacht for the queen, is he after a knighthood or just out of touch with what most will think of this. My own opinon is, if she wants one then buy it herself, she can afford it after all.

Until you realise what the last one was actually used for....

It's going to be a busy year with the olympics and the diamond jubilee. Should be exciting though.

I'm off down the bookies, I fancy Murray to win the gold. Crazy, I know, but he just might do it.

Notwithstanding getting het up about a 2.5 year old article... This is why opinions are best presented after doing a little research. You've got it arse about face so need to do the research now.

Start with reading all about what the last yacht was for.

Just charge everyone another £1 in tax to make up the funds.

In a day and age where my taxes go to dirty sluts getting boob jobs I'd much rather the UK had a Royal yacht - it's genuine value for money. The problem is that it's always put across as "the Queens yacht", in reality it's like Air Force One, it serves for the country. Sadly though it's far too easy to dismiss so will never happen - unless a private person funded it, who'd then get a Knighthood, who'd then start the silly tit-for-tat all over again.

It's too late now. By the time it's fully planned and built the queen will be dead and I'm not sure the public will be quite as supportive if this is a yacht for Charlie.

In 1997 Labour said they couldn't afford a new yacht (it was only going to be £70m or so) because the armed forces needed the money instead. Ironic given the money they pissed away in the subsequent decade or so.

Whilst I know the OP is a smidge slow off the mark with this one, it is interesting how people's imagination to publically funded jobs basically starts and ends with the local authority and the NHS.

Sorry ship builders of the Clyde - no jobs for you after all. The earnest middle class think the only way the country can invest in employment is primary school teachers.

Given what the last yacht was used for and given our maritime history, I think a new yacht is an excellent idea. Use it to showcase the very best of UK marine engineering.

Of course the terminally chippy and those with no vision or understanding of history will vote it down. Shame
