It's too late now. By the time it's fully planned and built the queen will be dead and I'm not sure the public will be quite as supportive if this is a yacht for Charlie.

In 1997 Labour said they couldn't afford a new yacht (it was only going to be £70m or so) because the armed forces needed the money instead. Ironic given the money they pissed away in the subsequent decade or so.
sadley, your right,

if it was a private sector ship, it could be designed and built in <2 years, but you only have to look at the farce that is the new aircraft carriers to see what a monumental stuff-up any government project is.

(for comparison, it only took 18 months from laying the keel to delivery for the Queen Mary 2)

Micheal Gove suggests we should all fork out for a new yacht for the queen, is he after a knighthood or just out of touch with what most will think of this. My own opinon is, if she wants one then buy it herself, she can afford it after all.
Until you realise what the last one was actually used for....
An in theory forces hospital ship, that didn't go to the Falklands because it ran on the wrong type of fuel???

Yeah a hospital ship

Britannia was designed to be converted into a hospital ship in time of war,[2][3] although this capability was never used. In the event of nuclear war, it was intended that the Queen would take refuge aboard Britannia along the North West coast of Scotland.

If you trying to imply it was for commerce why did the forces pay for it??

are you really that dumb?

where does the money for the armed forces come from?

and who else would you have manage and run a publicly owned/operated ship? Serco? G4S?

If its for commerce then lots of countries don't like other countries military hardware parked in their ports... gets everything started on the wrong foot.

As for who would run it you do know the royal navy doesn't run all the worlds super yachts don't you????

I'm sure there are lots of people in the UK who could run a large yacht and even build one, even better avoiding the inevitable military procurement disaster.

But if you want to you can pretend it can only be run by the royal navy.

If you going to try the queens flight as an example, you know the royal family also fly on commercial airlines now don't you??
