Here is why EU eurocrats laugh at us as we try to play it straight:

France unveils ban on immigrants whose 'personal behaviour' deemed a threat to national security
New law could stop criminals or communities considered unable to integrate
Critics say measure could be used to stop EU nationals entering the country
It comes amid growing row between the UK and Brussels over immigration
European Commission warned any European migrant cap would be illegal

European Union migrants could be refused entry to France if their ‘personal behaviour’ is considered a threat to ‘security or public order’.
The vaguely worded measure could be used to stop all kinds of undesirables entering the country, from those with criminal records to communities considered unable to integrate. Critics also believe it could be manipulated to stop almost any foreigner entering France, even those with EU passports.
It comes after the European Commission president, Jose Manuel Barroso, warned Britain that a cap on migrants arriving from neighbouring countries would be illegal.

I may be wrong, but I don't think it is up to a council to alter the number of councillors sitting on it. I blieve that is the responsibility of the local government commission. If I am right then your man was trying to introduce an unconstitutional, and thus illegal motion, which is why it was rejected. He then produced to insist on speaking when by the rules of such debates he was not supposed to.

So I believe he was "shouted down" for attempting an unconstitutional and thus illegal motion in an undemocratic manner. Which seems reasonable

You may be right, I have no way of knowing, but IMO it is this sort of political correctness that needs to change....turkeys should be able to vote for Xmas if it means the people they represent are better off...even if it stirs trouble in the fiefdom council chamber.

Did consider doing something similar myself but my masochistic tendencies have waned somewhat over the years. silly

Political correctness?
You are crazy.
This is law. Law needed to make democracies work. Designed to keep democratic checks and balances to make sure democracy works.

This story is about a UKIP councillor trying to make political capital out of an issue which he knows the other councillors have to reject by law. Supposed "common sense" that was never going to work and he knew it

"Democracy works"........ok if you say so. There's nothing more abhorrent than trying to make political capital out of something that was never going to work..... renegotiate with Brussels anyone?

Yes. You may think UKIP should be in power, but it didn't get enough votes.

In this case a council should not be able to change the number of councillors or wards. Otherwise a small majority could jerrymander to give themselves a permanent majority.
That could in certain circumstances be achieved by reducing the number of councillors without changing boundaries.

You want things to change Fine, persuade enough people to agree with you at the next election. But don't do it by illegal acts or pretending that the world is against you when you are raising an illegal motion

Just look for the old geezers outside with a pint in one hand and a ciggy in the other (or an e-cig if it's raining.

You really are something special.

I may be wrong, but I don't think it is up to a council to alter the number of councillors sitting on it - This is law - raising an illegal motion.

So you knew all along you weren't wrong because you knew it's the law after all.

ps I don't need you to tell me what I may, or may not, do or think but thanks for trying.

No. I have used google since then, and I am more confident I was right.

Lots of people on here trying to tell us that only UKIP have the answers. I'm just redressing the balance with some facts

Is it actually illegal, or just improper? Or possibly just inconvenient!

If someone actually knows it's illegal they could probably quote the relevant law. Until UKIP won a seat we always had someone offering barista type advice biggrin

10 minutes of your time...

...Derby Council meeting where UKIP's plan to reduce expenditure [by reducing the number of councilors] is batted away by the ruling Labour Councillors supported by the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats
