So go on then, tell me.

Why does it matter that stuff like steel making with its low salaries, horrible working conditions and low profits are replaced by highly paid jobs in pharmaceuticals, aerospace, space etc? Is there something wrong with the fact that these jobs are done in nice air condition offices in safety rather than hot dangerous factories?

If Fred is wrong, what is the reason?
in the ideal stable economy the different industries would complement each other. where you get this idea of low salaries and horrible working conditions from in the heavy manufacturing industries i have no idea .

Excuse me. Other things got in the way and I think it will take longer than I thought to collect some of the bits of data. Some are proving elusive. You would only criticise a half baked job, so you'll have to wait
Of course, no worries. smile
How are we getting along?

Well, that has opened my eyes. What a balanced, well argued piece!

I thought it was a little bit easy on the EU and our established parties to be fair.

What do you make of the quote of Heath in the fifth paragraph? Do you think, on reflection, that he was wrong?

With hindsight, yes, but at the time, he was uncharacteristically honest for Heath.

Modern steel plants pay good wages, the old manual stuff is mainly automated. Energy costs dominate.
I have spent time in one steel mill which in converting steel concast blooms to various products, from large forging and extrusion rounds down to small diameter bar, rod and strip had max 9 operatives.

Nice:

Today, an abusive message was sent from Mr Bashir’s official Twitter account to Douglas Carswell’s personal media spokesman Michael Heaver and politics blogger Guido Fawkes.

It read: “@Michael_Heaver @GuidoFawkes only vermin, like you, abuse hospitality food & drink then p*** and s*** in same plate.”

Mr Bashir's Twitter account was then closed down.

Survation Daily Mirror poll

Headline voting intention (with change in brackets since 24 December 2014):
CON 31% (+2); LAB 30% (-2); UKIP 23% (+3); LD 7% (-4); SNP 5% (+2); GRE 3% (+1); OTHER 1% (0)

As always national % are not that significant, translation into local constituencies is what counts. Actually it's translation into votes on the day that counts, but you get my drift.

No, I'm English. If I was Scottish NicDriffin would have probably called me a Sweaty Jock.
but are you for real?

you wrote
"More insults and zero apologies. Imagine my surprise.

You treat people as you find them?
So if I was black you'd call me a ?
Indian and you'd call me a ?
Chinese and you'd call me a chinky?
Jewish and you'd call me a Yid?
You're a bigoted xxxx. I've reported your posts and it's up to the mods how you're dealt with now.

But what exactly would I apologise for?

You are the one that has misread and misinterpreted the posts
and gone nuclear with the nonsense above.

Just to answer:

So if you were black and talking bks, I would say 'do some research, present some facts and arguments and stop talking bks!'.
Indian and the same
Chinese and the same
Jewish and the same

I really hope you get booted off here because you absolutely deserve it.
You didn't do any research or present any facts. You called me a traveller. Your slur was pointed out and you haven't apologised.

At least Farage has the sense to say sorry when he or his candidates have ballsed up and insulted people.
I don't believe this.

You believe that the phrase "fellow travellers" is a reference to Romanies?

You are coming across as a bit thick... and just reinforcing stereotypes.

If you really are Romany, then you would do your people a favour if you admitted that you were trolling.

Those industries did not collapse because of Thatcher, or high energy prices or any claptrap like that.
Rather the opposite, British Steel became one of the most efficient producers after privatisation - however you are wrong to assert that green taxes did no harm to the industry. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/en...
Why was that? Could it possibly be that under Thatcher's team of worst form of Torys and their bean counters, the Industries were deliberately denied access to essential improvements. Cannot have a UK Nation Owned Industry showing efficiency and making money.

I have followed this thread with interest from the start. If the multiplicity of opposing views here are a true reflection of those across the Nation then I now realise the Nation as a whole, rather than a decreasingly slim segment thereof, is ...... It's fate is both assured and deserved. Our International competitors know this and take full advantage. No Government can sort the huge mess out. Only the whole Team UK People can do that. If they have it in them.

There's the rub.

Plus, we need more immigrants. They are overall beneficial to this Nation apparently if the media and all the Politicos can be believed.

There's the rub #2

The polls published today are very interesting:

UK Polling Report said:
Populus – CON 34%, LAB 35%, LDEM 9%, UKIP 13%, GRN 6% (tabs)
Ashcroft – CON 32%, LAB 32%, LDEM 6%, UKIP 15%, GRN 9% (tabs)
Survation/Mirror – CON 31%, LAB 30%, LDEM 7%, UKIP 23%, GRN 3% (tabs)
A big variation in the UKIP / Green percentage. In the last one the Greens are entirely irrelevant but UKIP on 23%, in the Ashcroft one the greens are on 9%. Only polls, but very interesting nonetheless.

Pinch of salt. Over in Greece for the recent elections C4 announced today that despite Syriza been vilified by every news channel and paper in Greece they still outperformed the last opinion polls by almost 6 points.

If the same happened with UKIP it would put them up there with the LabCon.

In the real world, unlike UKIP, Syriza led in every poll.

I may have misread your post but it seems that you think the UK is in pretty dire straits. It's not a picture I recognise.
