We probably didn't lose a cure for cancer with his demise.

Apparently jumped into the harbour then got trapped between an old barge and the harbour wall ( hiding from Police..?)

He forgot some of the basic principles of Hide and Seek.

I don't actually agree, I've spoken to a couple of people in 'the real world' about this story this morning and everyone has had the same 'serves the stupid bd right' response.

I'd say it's the norm to not feel too much sympathy for someone who was running from the police with stolen properly meeting their end. If he was trying to save a stuck kitten and it happened he'd be worthy of a medal.

Was going to say the same thing. Why risk anything for a £99 BSO?
+ another. What a dispiriting lack of ambition.

If you're going to do something, including crime, do it right.

Numerous people who would have otherwise suffered at the paws of this scroat will now have a little less misery in their lives. It has also been removed from the gene pool.

Well worth the cost of the inevitable police enquiry, what?

People need to be responsible for their actions.

No one made this little darling steal a bike and ride it into the sea.

Controversial question:

If you knew that he'd stolen the bike, or you were a local and you knew he was a known thief etc, and you were at the harbourside when he went off the edge.

What would you do?

For a bike thief? Leave Darwin to take it's course.

Indeed. I had my garage burgled earlier on this year and had almost every physical possession that I cared about stolen - ran to tens of thousands of pounds worth of stuff that had been bought over 20+ years.

I still have nightmares, cannot sleep through worry and have just this morning paid my tripled car insurance premium (despite my car NOT being stolen) as a result of this theft.

In the scheme of things I was the victim of a "minor crime". And I'll tell you what - if I could visit death or mutilation on the scum that did this to me then I'd do so in a heartbeat - I don't give a fk about these people any more than they give a fk about the countless victims of their selfishness, laziness and greed. I really think that theft and burglary need the impact on their victims (and society) to be more accurately represented in punishments. Personally I really hope they die.

What consequence, if any, did the poor ickle dead person ever experience in their life prior to his Darwin moment I wonder?

It doesnt take a great leap of imagination to suggest this wasnt the first thing he nicked

This episode made me wonder why somebody would put themselves at risk of being apprehended by the Police by doing over a car parked in a pretty busy spot with nothing of value visible in broad daylight

My conclusion was that they obviously thought nobody would be bothered, and in the unlikely event that they were apprehended and processed by the judicial system the outcome would be something that wouldnt trouble them

So in this case one less scumbag roaming our streets is a bit of a result in my book

Cheers smile
I don't think you're right actually. Think about what drives a person to steal something.. especially a POS bike or a smash & grab. Is it for the jollies and the rewards, knowing that the risks are a ticking off from the authorities, or is it out of pure desperation, knowing that it is probably your only way to eat later?

People seem to have a complete empathy bypass when talking about criminals. This was a human being. Ok, he may have been a scummy one, and yes having things stolen is really really irritating, but nobody should be glad a person died - especially for such a trivial crime.

So having your hard earned possessions stolen is "irritating".

Some folks just do crime for sts and giggles ..."because they can"... and/or because they have no respect for other people or their property.

I once had the drivers window smashed in on my Alfa for no reason at all - nothing stolen. .. Probably Just a nasty bit of "fun" by some turd walking home from pub to the rough council estate not far from where it was parked. It was bloody aggravating - could never get the window to work properly again.
