Everyone knows the NUS has always, unfortunately, been prone to hijack by those whose principal aim in HE is to get into the organisation and inflict their micro-minded world views onto others in a semi-dictatorial manner.
The NUS was a joke when I was a student thirty years ago. Peopled with professional students destined to never get a proper job, largely, with the odd helpful individual thrown in to confuse matters.

I was incensed that membership was mandatory at my Uni. I absolutely would not have joined if it was possible not to.

These days I would refuse on ideological grounds and stand my ground about not joining if I ever went back to education as a mature student.
I was part of UMIST when we elected not to be part of the NUS, I am proud of the small part I played in that. I remember at the time various wanabee shop steward scousers moaning about it but in general everyone was happy to save their £12 a year or whatever it was.

And today, just to confirm exactly which corner they are in, the NUS president has decided to ban Jewish students from voting on the election of a new anti-racism officer. You couldn't make it up!

If ANY other organisation said that the police would be slapping them down with hate crime laws.

Change Jewish to almost any other equivalent word, and the BBC would be having kittens!

Laughable, and no one will do a thing.

As usual.

My university union did something decades ago: it left the NUS.

One of the reasons I went.

Says a lot about any nus members. They should leave in droves if they believed in anything the union is supposed to stand for.

Agreed, plus, I can imagine all sorts of unnecessary friction and unpleasantness when Student Grant tells (not asks) visiting workmen to bin the copy of the Sun they have on the dashboard of the Transit van.

And flags were at half-mast all over the UK when the King of Saudi Arabia died (Buck House and Parliament for starters. How is that any better or worse than this?

Once more unto the breach on a battle charge made from irrelevance.

The Saudis are a nasty piece of work, but we were supposed to be boohooing when they're king died. I don't remember too many people getting worked up about that.

Not trying to defend the NUS, but it seems like a fairly obvious case of double standards.

S'funny, I've always held that fascism has far more in common with the hard left of today than anyone else.

These days they would be worrying about the carbon footprint of a book-burning.

Oxford University is encouraging students to use the gender-neutral pronoun 'ze' instead of 'she and 'he'.
The students' union wrote in a leaflet that the move was intended to reduce the risk of transgender students being offended.
Students hope that the use of ‘ze’ will continue into university lectures and seminars, reported The Sunday Times.
According to Oxford University's behaviour code, using the wrong pronoun to define a transgender person is an offence.

So we ignore the wishes of the 99.7% in case we offend the remainder?
