Everyone knows the NUS has always, unfortunately, been prone to hijack by those whose principal aim in HE is to get into the organisation and inflict their micro-minded world views onto others in a semi-dictatorial manner.
The NUS was a joke when I was a student thirty years ago. Peopled with professional students destined to never get a proper job, largely, with the odd helpful individual thrown in to confuse matters.I was incensed that membership was mandatory at my Uni. I absolutely would not have joined if it was possible not to.
These days I would refuse on ideological grounds and stand my ground about not joining if I ever went back to education as a mature student.
And today, just to confirm exactly which corner they are in, the NUS president has decided to ban Jewish students from voting on the election of a new anti-racism officer. You couldn't make it up!

Change Jewish to almost any other equivalent word, and the BBC would be having kittens!http://thetab.com/uk/2016/07/19/nus-bans-jewish-st...
Students at London City Uni have banned newspapers whose editorials it disagrees with.
Students at City University of London, home to one of the country’s most respected journalism schools, have voted to ban the Sun, Daily Mail and Express from its campus. The university’s student union voted to ban the newspapers at its annual general meeting on Thursday night in a motion titled “opposing fascism and social divisiveness in the UK media. The motion said the titles have published stories that demonise refugees and minorities, have posted Islamophobic stories and “all actively scapegoat the working classes they so proudly claim to represent”.

Maybe they could build a nice bonfire and burn the newspapers on it, to send a real message.Students at City University of London, home to one of the country’s most respected journalism schools, have voted to ban the Sun, Daily Mail and Express from its campus. Doubtless get flamed to death for it, but if the decision was made with a vote, what's the issue? Why should this vote be attacked as ludicrous whilst the Brexit vote be sanctified?Students at City University of London, home to one of the country’s most respected journalism schools, have voted to ban the Sun, Daily Mail and Express from its campus. And flags were at half-mast all over the UK when the King of Saudi Arabia died (Buck House and Parliament for starters. How is that any better or worse than this?
Once more unto the breach on a battle charge made from irrelevance. Not trying to defend the NUS, but it seems like a fairly obvious case of double standards.

Oxford University is encouraging students to use the gender-neutral pronoun 'ze' instead of 'she and 'he'.
The students' union wrote in a leaflet that the move was intended to reduce the risk of transgender students being offended.
Students hope that the use of ‘ze’ will continue into university lectures and seminars, reported The Sunday Times.
According to Oxford University's behaviour code, using the wrong pronoun to define a transgender person is an offence.
