This is a great Ted Talk and easy to compare to our current career politicians, with all their spin and nonsense most will never get people to follow them because they don't truly believe in what they are saying themselves!

It's a good lesson. Ever heard "If you want something done properly you have to do it yourself"? That's because just telling people WHAT to do is not very effective. You need to tell them WHY your way is the right way...

How can you believe them? sorry for the tinfoil hat and everything.

The entire thought pattern now seems to be about gaining everything for your self interest. The whole thought of serving the electorate has died a death. I mean if your electorate pays the most party contributions or represents an easy way to keep yourself in power for more self interest they might get lip service.

With the internet as long as you stay grounded you can see a more rounded picture and it never ties fully into what your pedalled through our papers or through our politicians.

Are they good people trapped in the gears of a machine that over time grinds you down or are they evil people looking out for themselves? Either way, how can you trust what they say?

Kind of lolzy that he spends the first half quacking on about deconstructing tech with a wireless mic with massive feedback until someone slips him one plugged into an XLR

I don't believe any politician. This is useful to me because I know they are all in it for their own gain and as such I can disregard what they promise without wasting time deciding if that person is telling me what I want to hear.

Saves time in the long run

Right, so im not alone in my mistrust.

How does everyone want to sort this though? Im not talking about heads on pikes, just what would stop the lies?

Would making a parties pre-election promises binding by law stop it?

Should be law binding so that if they say "we are having a referendum on.............. (fill in the gaps)"

Or anything for that matter they should be given a time frame to work to, and if its not stuck to they get the boot and we re-elect.

For far to long they ve promised and promised and hardly delivered.

There all full of st!!!!

Ministers should also be required to have some form of qualification for whatever they are in charge of e.g. Minister of Defence must have served in the armed forces, Science Minister must hold a science PHd, Education Minister must have worked as a teacher, etc....

Mart is right.

We have what would seem like a class of people so out of touch with our presumed life.

I mean look at the rise of nigel farage, a man of the people who is an ex metal trader. Shows you that there must be a huge jump between what we think politicians are and what we are.

Whether it's good or bad the rise from the shop steward into politics has long died, people who are in the system and know its flaws and might have more grounded priorities are less likely to get on.

I hate to admit it, but Brand and the like are asking for something that has to happen sooner or later, just hope its not too touchy feely, star trek and holo-decks not hippy commune sort of thing.

Like seemingly everyone, I don't and never have believed a word politicians say. The days (if there ever were any) of the government serving the electing public for the benefit of them and the country have long gone, its all about what they can do for themselves and their party, nothing more.

I heard in the news today that the Conservatives announced that they plan on getting cancer screenings carried out and have the results given to you in a day - but only if they get elected again.

Why? Why not do the right thing and get it implemented NOW, whilst you're in power, instead of bribing the general public with what should be a basic service.

the rot starts at local council level ,permeates the civil service and manifests itself at westminster ,the entire political system needs an overhaul .
