Police killer Harry Roberts to be freed

Serious question: why is killing of the police always portrayed as so much worse than a killing of a civilian?
Because they are the thin blue line between civilisation and anarchy. We push them forward and watch while they grapple with people we'd sooner not be involved with. And they need protection from people who would otherwise remove them from that role. Some of that protection comes from the law and knowing that if you harm a police officer it'll be much much worse for you.Munter said:

The loss of the death penalty was sold to the British public by saying that they would die in prison as life would mean life.
Regardless of who was murdered the sentence should be life with no parole for cold blooded killers like this guy.
We should be outraged by this decision however as we have seen other released nothing will happen

Forty Eight years in jail.... and some don't think the punishment is enough.
That is a long stretch, he is an old man now.
Terrible crime for sure, but nothing can change that now, we are moving from punishment to vengeance.
In isolation agreed, however credible evidence also shows very recent violence, threats and most importantly no remorse for what he did..... That is a long stretch, he is an old man now.

Yes 48 years is a long stretch, but why should he get his life back now ?That is a long stretch, he is an old man now.

The three coppers can't come back now, just because 48 years have passed, and the families still don't get their Father, Son or brother back. The innocent parties are still serving a life sentence, so why shouldn't the guilty party.
I've never understood people who have this disproportionate, and misplaced concern for the murderer / thief / rapist, when the victims get none. It seems like the attitude is "Well it was a long time ago, they should have got over it by now"
......and from a rehabilitation point of view, it seems he hasn't been, and also shows no remorse. So why worry about him ??

Because he's costing us lots of money in prison?? Sadly uf he us released, the world he knows will be unrecognisable from todays world..
He will cost us a fortune whether he is in or out of prison. I'm quite happy paying for pieces of st like him to be banged up. His crime would attract a whole life sentence now, rightly. To me for murder to die in jail is not vengeance, it is justice. There is a difference between cold blooded killers like him, the ripper, the black panther etc and someone who finds his wife in bed with another man and kills him. The later you could possibly release as how likely is a repeat? The former they deserve no mercy, no chance of release.
The guy who killed the three police was lucky as a few months earlier he would have been hung and this discussion would be pointless.
As other have said, he will feel the sun on his face, taste the salt from the sea and be free to live the rest of his life to an old age, the three police officers will not and some want us to feel sorry he did 48 years?

Whilst I'd accept that he's a piece of st, what purpose is served by keeping him inside at this point?
Here is another good reason for keeping them inside.http://www.dailymail.co.uk/wires/pa/article-281365...
That crime has blighted the lives of this family, and cost the Michael Payne his life as well, so why should we ever worry about the person who committed the murder, much less campaign for their release !!
