Apart from annoying the locals, how will this work? Will there be checkpoints at the border catching people who had been perfectly fine in England but are now dangerously drunk in Scotland?

This is classic SNP
be seen to be doing something
The actual effect is irrelevant
As it would be far far far far far to hard to actual catch those driving above the current limit so the have dropped the limit
It will have ZERO effect on my life as the chances of being stopped are almost nil
Like the up coming ban on air weapons unless you have license
Sounds tough
Will have zero effect on the neds running around glasgow shoting folk with air rifles

Do something! like slashing millions of pounds of the NHS budget result in hospital patients being given slop for meals. (Aberdeen hospitals).Well done the SNP.
If ten 10% of accidents are caused by drunk drivers, it means 90% are caused by sober drivers, let all get pissed and reduce accidents

I wonder how many accidents are caused by people with between 50 and 80 mg per 100ml, since this is the only group that could conceivably be affected by this.
Exactly. These measures are always justified by saying how many people are killed by drink drivers, neglecting to mention that anyone who was a drink driver before will still be one, just to a greater degree. Pwig said:
Am I right by thinking there has never been a study which proves that you are a worse driver after a pint than before? In fact I think every study shows you are actually better.
Happy to be proved otherwise.
You are correct, although some pints are stronger than others. 1st year psychology experiment at university (I loved Uni!)Happy to be proved otherwise.
After consuming 1-2 units of achohol reaction times improve by 0.2 seconds. After consuming 3+ units reaction times quickly drop below the control, which is 0 units.

But I believe the attitude to risk and confidence/perception can change after a legal amount of booze, so it's not clear cut(?)Happy to be proved otherwise.
As usual, I think the only people with will affect is the law abiding vast majority. The "five and drive" crowd or absolute pissheads aren't going to stop breaking rules because the rules have altered slightly.
Continue down this road, and we'll all be restricted to 8mph all over the country in our cotton wool wrapped cars.
The only vague justification I can think of is that there might be some people who think "I'll just have the one, then drive home", but don't actually have the self discipline and end up having a couple and going over the current limit. If it's easier to abstain completely rather than just have the one (which is certainly my experience where biscuits are concerned) then lowering the limit to the point where they can't even have the first drink may help a bit. But this is going to be so marginal as to make no measurable difference I would have thought.

Lets face it, most people's aversion to not drinking and driving comes from the drink driving campaign, not from experience.
Is any problem that exists not pretty much solely from the kind of idiots who think it's ok to drive home at 2am after getting completely lashed in a night club?
I have just emailed my MSP asking how she is goingto vote on this - I probably didn't need to ask as she is SNP - and for clarity on the sentencing which will apply. I cited the France as an example of EU countries which apply a fine for 50-80mg/100ml blood and a ban above 80mg asking if the same will apply in Scotland.
I shall let you know what/if she replies.

I like a pint if I go out for a meal or something. Usually I'll drive and the missus will have a couple of glasses of wine. I'll make my first drink a pint of something nice, then have water or soft drinks. This law is nothing more than a restriction on my freedom to enjoy a pint responsibly.wolves_wanderer said:

Sandy Allan, The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents Road Safety Manager in Scotland, said he believed the move would save lives and prevent injuries on Scotland's roads.
He added: "There is a considerable body of research which shows that reducing drink drive limits is effective in reducing drink-drive deaths and injuries. We would like to see the rest of the UK follow Scotland's example."
Is this factually correct? He added: "There is a considerable body of research which shows that reducing drink drive limits is effective in reducing drink-drive deaths and injuries. We would like to see the rest of the UK follow Scotland's example."
