They must employ some morons for managers.

If I was him I would have had him inside, given him a chair to sit on and a Morrison's mug full of tea on perma refill with a bacon butty every couple of hours.

According to Morrisons:

"Ive spoken to the manager about this. The gentleman was offered to stand inside near the checkouts or outside where he could make more money. The gentleman advised he would stand outside. We would never make anyone collecting for such a good cause to stand outside. Shabana"

Quite the opposite of what the manager had to say for himself this afternoon!

...but not inside the main doors, as normal.

Perfect PR response - sounds great, and diverts attention from the main issue which is the treatment of the chap by the manager...

You have it the wrong way round there.

Her fought so that Morrisons do have the choice of who can seek charitable donations on their property. One that he appears to have accepted and chose to stand outside.

The public hysteria over this is incredible. God forbid that people should respect other peoples lawful decisions, be they an individual or a business.

Nothing surprises me with Morrisons their customer service is the absolute pits...

You should contact the local media with this story. Result: one re-educated manager and the problem resolved.

He wasn't selling for Cancer Uk or Oxfam or the Air Ambulance, he was selling f poppies!
A charity that is behind the reason, or one of millions dead reasons, that the manager is and has a shop without a f crooked cross above its entrance!!

We have an 11 day collection at the store I work in every year. Poppy Appeal always get the works, tables & chairs and the offer of free tea & coffee if they fancy it. Many of our local collection volunteers are old soldiers, the least we can do is make sure they are looked after.
I'm looking forward to their collection, they are great to stop and chat to on the way out in the evening & can put a smile on my face even after the crappiest of shifts.

Supermarket managers do not have much discretion these days. Almost everything is dictated from the top. The manager's job is simply to make sure that policies are implemented. The manager's salary reflects this.

In this case, the manager had an instruction to place a promotional display inside the front door. If she disobeyed this instruction, she would have been liable to be sacked.

Morrisons cannot really be blamed either. Their profits, and share price, have plummeted over the last year. If they go bankrupt, then the gentleman won't have anywhere to stand next year.

I'll be buying my poppy at the petrol station, as I do every year.

Yea right - as if a store manager is going to do all of that.

True. And they will understand the many people who will now make a lawful decision to no longer shop there.

Same at my local Waitrose - really do look after the older chaps who rattle the tins. I do my few hours stint over the given weekend and really get looked after; but nothing compared to those who deserve it thumbup

Just because one Supermarket store is a rogue, doesn't mean everyone is. Broad brush response from the ignorant.

Indeed. There are two Morrisons on my way back here and I frequent them both. Both shops give the Poppy sellers space for a couple of trestle tables and chairs along with access to the in-store cafe. I will quite happily continue to buy my groceries from each one, guilt free.

Of course he is.

That is solid gold PR.

All your customers see you being very nice to a veteran. That is how you build loyalty.

Personally I feel they should do it anyway, we owe these guys a lot, but I know how cynical retail is.
