Rochester By-Election. Consequences of UKIP Win on Tory/Lab

Less than 51% voter turnout? For a by-election that's been getting plenty of national press that seems pretty pathetic to me. Does it mean that the LibLabCon voters said "Sod it, there's no point bothering, it'll be kipper anyway!"?
Probably a combination of potential Conservative voters knowing that a vote for Cameron is as bad as a vote for Clegg or Miliband but still won't vote for what they think might threaten the cheap labour immigration agenda. With the potential Labour swing to UKIP deciding that the jury is still out as to wether Farage is really the new Powell which the country so badly needs.Edited by XJ Flyer on Friday 21st November 03:15
yup- Lab/Lib didn't bother putting much effort in. Miliband for example just failed to support the candidate at all so he didn't look weak.
Tory MP's from Media accounts did the minimum they were forced to - William Hague according to one paper turned up and knocked on exactly 10 doors (of which not all were in) and then caught the train back to London!

According to Farage Cameron threw the kitchen sink and possibly the bathroom at it.The arrogant comments of the Con who jumped ship to UKIP then jumped back again say it all.Probably because he is actually more or less a self confessed Europhile and is obviously offering exactly the same thing as Wilson was offering in 1975.Axionknight said:

On the basis of the Cons plans to concrete over the south east just like Labour before them.No surprise that the establishment then want the views of the local population ignored in that regard.Rather than sharing the nation's development demand on a more equitable basis around the country not just keep putting ever more in the south east. Conservative: 1965
Labour: 716

I have to agree 100%, I appreciate that London and its surrounding areas generate a lot of revenue for the UK, but it has been decades since a government has been anything other than London centric, having disregarded investment in many parts of the country where it was sorely needed.

The arrogance of the Cons and Neil in that regard is staggering considering that the Cons stood on an anti development mandate in the south east at the last election.Obviously the idea of the electorate dictating terms to their elected councillors and MP's is something that UKIP are happy with.Unlike the Cons who are obviously all about vice versa just like Labour. The problem in this case being the historic policy of London seeing the surrounding counties as a building site and dumping ground for its unsustainable rate of inward population growth. Not London centric. If George Eustace is so keen on development then maybe he should volunteer to build some major new towns in his constituency in Cornwall.Edited by XJ Flyer on Friday 21st November 03:49
