Only scratches for the occupants, but since this looks like an Impreza with an after-market exhaust I'm surprised the BBC are using "family saloon" instead of "high powered sports car" which is their usual rhetoric.

Not sure that would be BBC rhetoric, more DM style.

Still, the car split apart nicely, I assume there was a lateral impact, if so then they are extremely lucky that it impacted in front of the bulkhead.

Given the type of car, and the way it split, it wouldn't surprise me if it were.

The doors are different colours. Wouldn't surprise me if it was a cut and shut.

Must have been going quite quick with kids in the car to cut it in two!

What is it? It looks a little like a Toyota Camry to me.

The monocoque is intact, the detached engine compartment looks like an oddly very clean break which would dissipate energy from the crash.

Thats what I'd call it. The exhaust is big too, 3" system by the looks.

Wondered why the road was closed yesterday. Not quite sure how people manage to ditch cars down that stretch - its fairly regular occurrence.

That diff+intercooler+straight exhaust system.
I'm not saying it's an Impreza, but it's an Impreza.

Nowhere in the article does it refer to the car as a "family Saloon"

Yes OK but it does say it is a saloon belonging to a family...

What has happened to PH, used to be full of petrolhheads, it is clearly an Impreza.

My immediate thought too... How can anyone not know that's an Impreza?!

The colour gives it away as well.

"Nothing sticks to the road in the wet better than an Impreza."

Sadly, in this case it looks like the front end was substantially better at sticking to the road than the back end.

That is MOST definitely a cut & shut

The bulkhead/front crash structure is about the strongest part of a car & to have both legs of the chassis removed & the front half of the bulkhead peeled away & the rest of it largely intact & undamaged I would say without a shadow of doubt one half of that car belongs to another car.

Cutting & shutting there leaves the bulkhead ID in place
