So the UK is under threat by terrorists, nothing new there then. We underwent years of IRA activity in the UK with bombs going off left right and center, so to speak.

But is this mentioning of threat levels akin to how the USA regime works?.... in that to take away some public freedoms you have to make them feel threatened?

(Government's Counter–Terrorism and Security Bill - aimed at these religious warring types, but also allows the government to invade the privacy of any UK citizen).

I am wondering just how at danger a single member of the public actually is when at residence in the UK? ('Insignificantly' springs to mind). The government seem to be getting a lot of powers at the expense of our relative danger. All just opinion of course!

Im so glad other people see through the mist of this.

How much freedom should we give up for a threat that is hardly material, there are no constant attacks from extremists, yet we must allow people into our lives and metadata.

If you've got nothing to hide and all that.

Someone on the mail website put:

"ID RATHER LIVE IN A POLICE STATE THAN AN ISLAMIC STATE"

So hurrah for UK ignorance, the people truly are fked now we're that stupid.

The terrorist threat to the UK really must be dealt with. Its a real risk to all of us and those who disagree are kidding themselves.

The only problem is they happen to run the country already. Not sure where we go from there.

Terrorism "the unofficial or unauthorized use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims." The powers that be have done/do and will continue to do both of these.

If there is an all time high terror thread from "the Islamist faction" (and I'm not suggesting that I feel terrorised) then the blame lies squarely at the doors of 95% of the last 65 years of politicians who have supported excessive immigration of people whose cultures and values are at odds to British culture and values. By allowing this to happen they have failed at a significant part of their job which is to be proactive in protecting the British public against future threats. I believe there were some politicians many decades ago who warned against this, but were generally derided and ignored.

There's a bit of the bit who cried wolf here.

I thought our all time high would have been after 9/11 or 7/7?

The longer were at an all time high with nothing happening the public aren't going to believe the warnings when the st properly hits the fan.

Just an excuse to snoop. If you wanted to commit terrorist acts you'd use dead letter drops not email FFS.

Meh. So someone in government has shares in a red lightbulb factory and we're supposed to panic.

Just after Bond parked his mini Jet Plane at the fuel station and said "Fill her up please".

I blame Rita Coolidge she has a lot to answer for.

Out of curiosity, what people/parties warned against it? Who are the 5% you mention? I'm assuming Enoch Powell was the main one.

Nothing to do with the British and French politicians who drew lines all over the Middle East map after WWI and said 'you have this bit, we'll have that bit and sod the bit we promised to the Arabs.' then?

Apologies, a presumption on my part. Yes Powell is the main one, and although he used what many would describe as inflammatory language, I think he had a point. Surely he was not the only one? Perhaps publicly he was. I assumed that there have been others at various time who aired concerns about immigration numbers? I know there are many right now thanks to recent political events, but on the whole they seem rather insincere.

Without doubt Western influence in the Middle East has had at least a destabilising effect much of the time, in both more recent times and when they drew lines on a map.

Im getting bored of all the BS we hear on an almost daily basis.

Who the fk is a "Terrorist!"

As soon as we (the UK) start saying, the threat from Islam is at the greatest it has ever been, the sooner we can sort it out.

We've always been at war with Oceania. Follow the yellow brick road people, avoiding lone wolves...

To be fair it's not a question of unknown unknowns, but one of known unknowns coming to the fore. Since the Lee Rigby attack the security forces have to see every possible fruit loop nut case who ever crossed their radar as a potential murderer and terrorist, that significantly increases the level of threat, especially with these fellas arriving back from Syria.
