Someone arrested near the scene, not at the scene.

Man arrested near the scene on an un-related matter.

There's been a lot of dodgy reporting from shock jocks about this.

If you are on Twitter follow https://twitter.com/nswpolice for accurate information.

Hardly appropriate in a thread about violent religious extremism.

Shalom.

Does Australia have much experience in dealing with this kind of thing?
Yes, probably more so that the British. Not terrorist per se, but certainly gunned up Middle Eastern thugs.

Sounds like it is one poorly organised nutter who is doing it for the press attention, hope they get him soon before he hurts someone.
Another ran out, 2 girls

Although it is a good thing to know what is going on, the way the media clamber all over these events never sits well with me. They need to minimise the exposure because maximum coverage is exactly what the people who cannot live peacefully and insist on barbarism want.

Admittedly, with the media's insatiable appetite for stories (nothing sells like a death, violence, tragedy and scandal) this won't be happening..

Off to Sydney in a few weeks so I hope everyone makes it out in good health.

Just announced that the guy requested an ISIS flag, an interview with the PM in return for some hostages.

Crims in the crowd gathered watching are getting pissed and talking selfies. Maybe this is the way to combat terrorism?

ISIS had previously warned about attacks in Australia, sadly this will probably only end in a bloodbath. RIP to anyone who is killed in this frown

Our youngest daughter is in Sydney right now. Bit of a worrying time as we couldn't get her on the phone. Eventually what's app comes to the rescue. Apparently the city is on lockdown and she is so stressed she bought some new flip-flops and went to Bondi Beach.

So, not too stressed then!

There are people's loved ones trapped in there.
Are some people really so desperate for attention that they have to make jokes and talk and about bloodbaths?
I feel sorry for you.

I hope this is resolved peacefully.

Terrible news, I hope the police get enough information from those who have escaped to bring this to a swift end.

You'd hope that a trained sniper could take him out through the glass if he keeps getting that close to the front, swift justice served!!

The cafe is located across the road from a big news station! coincidence maybe?

I'd love a policy to come about for a media blackout on events relating to terrorist acts.

Mind you I can't help think governments want the coverage nothing like abit of fear to pass this and that 'terrorism/surveillance' law through.

And, according to BBC1, he "only" has a shotgun, the inference being that whilst that is obviously still a potentially-lethal weapon, it indicates a certain lack of sophistication and therefore probably organisation, ie it's possibly not linked to a wider, more serious group or plan.

Unless, as one might wish, it is only the gunman who is wasted. Then I doubt anyone will much care how he rests. I certainly won't.

Jemel - we've done it, we're in, quick get the flag out and show the world, now is our time
Arhmed - what the **** is that
Jemel - the flag, isn't it...
