Meanwhile in Belgium - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-30478231 - Four armed men have entered a flat in the Belgian city of Ghent and police have sealed off the surrounding area.

Our youngest daughter is in Sydney right now. Bit of a worrying time as we couldn't get her on the phone. Eventually what's app comes to the rescue. Apparently the city is on lockdown and she is so stressed she bought some new flip-flops and went to Bondi Beach.

So, not too stressed then!
Ive been in Manly all day today, and the general mood has been "Terrorist? Hostages? Siege? Eh, where's all that then??" When I picked my daughter up from school this afternoon, many parents had escaped the lockdown (its not really that watertight...) and mentioned that the mood changed as soon as you got out over the Harbour Bridge.

I always thought it odd that Australia would be any sort of terrorist target - I'm just not sure we're that big a player on the world stage for it to make a difference. And there is an awful lot of distance between places here.

I also reckon, based on my years of experience of internet commenting, that this is 'just some nutter' not anything organised or connected

Pretty st terrorist IMHO, pisspoor preparation, took the wrong flag and demanding a genuine ISIS one now. Also allegedly has a shotty so not exactly packing serious fire power a'la AK's etc. odds on he's a nutter who will either make himself dead or will be taken out by Sgt Bruce or Wazza.

Feel for the poor sods in there though hope it comes to a safe end with no one injured. I used to work in Martin Place years ago when I lived in Sydney so it's weird knowing you've been in that same cafe.

The Journalists, Politicians and other usual suspects who consistently whine about 'militaristic' Police seem to have gone a bit quiet. I'm sure they'll pop up again when it's all over, offering their specialist opinions.

Picture from earlier. Taken outside my work where most of the press are, entrance to the cafe is on the far right.

indeed. 2/10.

I gave him 2 points for his jihadist bandana and the fact that he's still holed up after 7 hours and got some media attention.

Strange you are both being so flip given that the situation is ongoing.

I and I'm sure skinny boy, hope dearly that nobody is hurt. Although I don't really want to start a competition to see who is the most concerned.

I was simply commenting that this terrorist comes across as being very incompetent. If my loved ones were in there, it would give me some comfort seeing people escape and thinking he didn't appear to be as well prepared or in control of the situation as he might be. I would hope the hostages have a much greater chance of surviving this event than some other attacks, like the ones in Kenya.

Exactly squire! This has all the hallmarks of the average nutter. It's more Dogday afternoon than Muslimgeddon. I have no idea who is holed up in there for all I know I may have friends in this situation as no names have been released as yet. So although it's a major concern the dynamics at the moment are pointing to hopefully a peaceful ending to this.

I hope so too, but a shotgun can do a lot of damage.

Over 12 hours now. Terrorist must have been up for at least 2 hours beforehand. Only one terrorist.

This will reach its conclusion soon. Hopefully without loss of hostage life.

That's the general thinking here.

Can't help but feel a dramatic explosion or hail of bullets from a number of people would be an indication of a more coordinated approach.
