Right or wrong in terms of the moral wisdom of backing Galtieri during the Dirty War, you have to contextualise Washington's attitude to Britain during the Falklands conflict.

I'm not going to dispute the reasons for the US position at the time as there are many interpretations of what was happening behind the scenes in the US and I'm sure Haig, Weinberger and Reagan all had their own agendas.

The point is that the US don't jump to our defence automatically any more and we should likewise be more cautious before diving head first into what are effectively American overseas projects.

I dunno why I was thinking about this earlier - there was a thread years back on PH where you had to click on Wikipedia's 'Random Article' and see how many links it took to get to the Adolf Hitler page. The most links won.
