Sounds like a "just in case". Lots of people suddenly start betting and the bookies are thinking that just in case it does happen, it will be a big hit.

Social meja, dontcha love it.

So the commonwealth would find out before Britain if its done in the speech, as its aired around the world before we see it at 3 so I think the DM might be wrong. If and when it happens they will announce it in blighty first so we are first to know

Let's say she did for a minute though...
That would be ridiculous. By the time she'd told people she'd abdicated she'd be back on the throne again.

What no dreamers all shouting we should remove the royal family and have an elected head of state who will be far far far better then the current head of state

But strangely they never ever name who will actually be this person

I believe the she has another 465 or so days to go before she overtakes Queen Victoria’s position of Britain’s longest reigning monarch.

I would not expect her to consider giving up before then.

I love that you've posted a rebuttal to an argument nobody has posted by effectively saying "nobody has posted this yet but here's what I think of it...!" Top work!
Outflank the dullards before they wake up. Common people are so boring.

Our royal system is brilliant, it exists for image, tourism and occasion. Whilst there may be minor refinements on the edges the process is mainly superb and far, far better than any alternative.

It would be having anyone who actually did anything of note that would be problematic.
Not true actually, she does have some jobs to do, that she promised to do in her coronation oath. I am a supporter of the royal family, but have recently learned that possibly she hasn't done her job properly, so I'm now less enthusiastic.

The whole point is that there is almost nothing that she has to do that matters and those things certainly have been done. And it's actually that ability and willingness to do almost nothing that is political or meaningful that is the strength, any concept of using or expressing opinion on any subject or note is avoided. Charles has been more controversial at times but Elizabeth has been brilliant at it for many, many years.

Don't think she will either.

Quite a few people do care, The Queen is the only thing between us and King Charles....
Hopefully HMTQ will stay put. There's always the possibility of Charles shuttling off first.

Then you can release some bad really bad news in quick succession....

On the 9th September 2015, she will have taken over from Victoria as the longest raining monarch, she won't abdicate before then.

I wonder why there is this sudden interest and speculation about her abdicating.

Why should that matter to her? You are assigning a view based on no knowledge that it matters.

Personally I suspect that her view is that she is and will remain Queen as long as she is alive, but I have no evidence for it.

Personally I don't think she will abdicate as being Queen is her duty and she will remain Queen until the day that she dies, the Queen Victoria thing is just a point that I was making, however I would have thought if she was planning on abdicating she would wait the 9 months or so to break the record.

Sure, she might want that but it's equally possible that she really doesn't care about that. Who knows?

Of course, I was just speculating, it is academic anyway as I can't see her abdicating.

Some suspicious betting in and around Balmoral, and Winsor. Not saying there is any insider dealing, but I hear she likes a flutter, and she might be trying to get even.

So what would you expect your elected President to do? Given that almost all of the role is theatrical in dressing up for occasions and meeting and hosting people from other countries in a similar way and given that they should have no political or other influence - who else would be any good at it?

The Queen's Christmas Message is pre-recorded. I don't think that an actual date is given but this year's speech has already been recorded (possibly earlier this week). At the same time there has been a spike in bets being placed on the Queen abdicating which makes the bookies think that someone knows something.
