A lot of speculation at the moment from a few news sources and social media:

I can't see it myself.

Don't think she will either.

Quite a few people do care, The Queen is the only thing between us and King Charles....

Never going to happen, she has the rightful old school attitude, it's is a duty/job for life and she will continue to do it until she is carried out in a box.....

Let's say she did for a minute though...

How long would Charlie stay for? Would he selfishly hog the position for ages, in a self-righteous, entitled manner?

Or would he recognise (like pretty much everyone else) that William is a far better, more suited heir in these modern times, and pass the throne to his son fairly early on?

He is smile

She'll stay in until she carks it.

At which point I suspect Charles might end up moving to one side asI guess he'll be well into his 70s.

If Charles was going to stand aside, might he have not already done that? I cannot see this happening. He has waiting his whole life for a shot at the title.

I also cannot see HM abdicating.

I certainly don't think she will be maybe there ought to be some consideration for enabling the monarch to 'retire' from public duty when they reach 65-70 like the rest of us might?
Ok, that doesn't quite work out for Charles who has waited an awful long time for this but maybe the rule kicks in with William? He's 32 now and that gives him 33 years on the throne (if he became King right now). Maybe Charles has 10 years on the throne, William takes over until he's 70 and then passes on to George and so on?

The current 'rules' didn't really anticipate the monarch lasting until they were 100.

That would be ridiculous. By the time she'd told people she'd abdicated she'd be back on the throne again.

What no dreamers all shouting we should remove the royal family and have an elected head of state who will be far far far better then the current head of state

But strangely they never ever name who will actually be this person

But, statistically speaking, it is generally anticipated that monarchs will have a much higher life expectancy than their subjects. Those that died of natural causes (i.e. not killed in battle or beheaded by republicans) mostly lived well in to a relatively old age (i.e. Henry III died aged 65 at a time when most people were lucky to see their 50s, Edward I was 68, Edward III was 64 etc etc). We've only had one abdication since William the Conqueror (assuming you don't count Edward II and Richard II who were forced at sword point), I can't see the Queen deciding to be the second one even if she does hit 100. Instead I suspect more duties and roles will be given to Charles and William, especially for any overseas trips.

I love that you've posted a rebuttal to an argument nobody has posted by effectively saying "nobody has posted this yet but here's what I think of it...!" Top work!

Come the revolution, comrades. I'm happy to step in and employ historians to take the stolen land back, and find the rightful heirs to all that Cornish and Scottish Land, which was stolen over the last 10,000 years.

+1 rolleyes

I think she will stay until Charles is past it, then hand the keys straight to Will - either that or Charles will have to agree to stand aside before she abdicates.
I reckon she accepts he's a loon and that the country would be far better off with Will.

Either that or an abdication followed by a quick limo ride for the new king paperbag

Our royal system is brilliant, it exists for image, tourism and occasion. Whilst there may be minor refinements on the edges the process is mainly superb and far, far better than any alternative.

It would be having anyone who actually did anything of note that would be problematic.

I may do the same. 50 posts per topic all posting Yawn. What a rubbish place Pistonheads would be.

OP you say lots of news sources commenting on this but then you post a link to the Daily Mail website!
