i've no idea why anyone with a strong opinion that its not at all off to use this phrase in relation to Korea would need enlightening otherwise why would they express that opinion?
unless they were merely saying 'i know nothing at all about this so it must be fine'
I do know, from a real Korean and everything so I would be "fascinated" to hear your point of view.unless they were merely saying 'i know nothing at all about this so it must be fine'

As the OP, may I thank you for royally screwing-up my thread, well played. 5 pages of whinging about your stupid comment, 3rd one in too.Kowtow is a word that has been used in the English language for many years, I think most normal people understand what it means.

Can we all shut-up about it now. We all know what it means, let's stick to the subject matter.
i've actually forgotten what the subject was. Oh yes, Sony kowtowing to (North Korean?) hackers. There was a film reviewer on radio four this evening who has actually seen the film. To my surprise he says it was actually quite funny. I had assumed Kim Yong Tubby had done us a favour by getting the film withdrawan.

What stage is the movie at? Is it finished?
I understand Sony pulled it due to threats to cinemas; if they now go ahead and release it, and a cinema is bombed, they will be to 'blame' - in the eyes of litigious compensation lawyers.
It's dog eat dog.
very good, on a serious note though who is talking about reprisals or bomb attacks on cinemas? NK hasn't got a worldwide Jihad thing going on, in fact all it has going on is in NK.....and that ain't much I understand Sony pulled it due to threats to cinemas; if they now go ahead and release it, and a cinema is bombed, they will be to 'blame' - in the eyes of litigious compensation lawyers.
It's dog eat dog.
Wonder if the actors, etc will get paid - aren't the stars often on a percentage of sales deal?

'a real Korean and everything'. sounds legit
Ok everyone has been very patient with you to be fair, either explain why you find the phrase offensive when used in relation to Korea or just admit you messed up.We all mess up sometimes, it's not the end of the world...
This better be good...

I saw this on the news this morning, and one twitterer on the subject said: "all this has done is ensure the film will be seen by many more than otherwise would have done".
I think this is very true. I hadn't heard of the film, or knew Sony were making it, but now I want to watch it.
Some say Sony have bowed to the hackers, I think they have played a blinder, when this gets released on Blu-Ray it will be huge.
Apparenly not. They have pulled the film completely and have confirmed there are no further release plans, including on DVD or VOD.I think this is very true. I hadn't heard of the film, or knew Sony were making it, but now I want to watch it.

I concur, put up or shut up. If you're not willing to explain how it's offensive you'll just have to kowtow to all of us.
This better be good...
as good for you as your happiness in total ignorance? probably notThis better be good...
even the fount of all PH knowledge wikipedia gives a slight introduction but of course froth mouthed posters demand packaged enlightenment to 'disprove' their entirely uninformed yet fixed opinion
ah well, hardly a surprise really
Paramount have now ordered all cinemas that were going to show Team America instead, that they cannot.
They refuse to give a reason. What utter bks, if a north Korean national was found to go on a killing spree in US cinema\s then the US would have pretty good evidence that this was ordered and NK would be as good as declaring war on the USA, which wouldn't last long or end well for them.
Its cowardice by the studios and I am very surprised given Americas normal attitude to this kind of thing.
Something else is going on here we aren't finding out about yet.

This is bull crap, why are Sony bowing down to the little shti?
Because he is psychopathic dictator with a huge standing army, weaponry and who is now in command of a pretty good set of hackers. Sony are Japanese, Japan has a bit of "previous" with Korea and China. China has fat boys back, Japan are currently trying to thaw relations with China. So what should a private company do? Say FU KJU and risk, at best, destruction of their company, at worst, a major incident amongst the three (or four if you want to throw the USA into the equation) countries that are currently in dispute? Of course they should back down, the responsibility for dealing with nutters like KJU should be dealt with at international level not by a private company. That's what they pay tax for.Gassing Station | News, Politics & Economics | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
