<snip>I had a big burger from McDonald's the other day. First time in years. On the menu the burger was nearly 700 calories. I guess the chips would ahve taken it to 1000. Afterwards I genuinely felt like I'd eaten very little. I can see how people put away multiple big Mac's, they don't hit the spot at all. Because they're crap foods.
All fast food makes me hungry shortly after - it's like an addiction
Sugar/carbs will raise your blood sugar level after which it'll drop like a stone and you feel hungry.

I had a bit of a health problem and had to give up cycling. The weight piled on despite me going to the gym 3x a week. I cut my intake of food by a considerable degree but it seemed to make no difference. I put on a bit over 5 stone and even dieting to a reasonable amount did not reduce my weight; it, merely stopped me putting it on. I have a back problem and this limited my ability to exercise. The weight piled on. Then I found I had borderline hypothyroidism.

It is very difficult to remove weight with this defect. The simple answer is simple because it ignores the fact that one has to maintain a healthy diet.

My levels have increased slightly and last test they are above the border. Testing again next week.

I'm dropping weight, ever so slowly. I'm hungry all the time. I haven't had a take-away for over 6 years. Processed food is a no-no. I have infrequent meals out.

I'm not clinically obese, but merely overweight. Yet I reckon I eat bugger all.
Do you do an accurate calorie count of all food and drink you consume? Its worth a try and a bit scary.

I’ve put on quite a few kg since October so now on the 5:2 or even 4:3 diet if I can manage it. Dry January as well. 600 calls on the hungry days is not a lot but a nice bit of fresh fish on a big salad is great. 1500 -2000 max on the other days. Plus exercise of course. I’m lucky I love running.

Track your calories for a week, you may be surprised.

As a side thought, you don't mention what you drink? guessing you avoid the obvious stuff like Coke but do you have a beer / cider / wine with dinner as they contain more calories than people think. about 120 calories for glass of wine, 150-200 for a can / bottle of beer/ cider.
You may as well just eat a Mars bar.

Also some fruit squashes contain a ridiculous amount of sugar so if you have moved from fizzy to squash its worth checking too.

I know I shouldn't say this on PH, but the cause of obesity is cars!
As the obese get fatter, walking or cycling will use more energy (due to moving the greater mass), so it overcomes the problem more and more.
Job done, the solution is to use the legs God gave us, and avoid the use of vehicles which don't use human energy to propel them.
Happy New Year!

A Big Mac meal is over 1300 Kcal. Many hours walking or cycling to get rid of that.

Viable exercise isn’t going to counter overeating or a poor diet.
Depends how you cycle - I can use 1000 calories an hour if I try hard. If cycling (even on flat roads) you can make it as hard as you want just by trying to go faster - In hilly areas you have to put out a minimum effort just to get up the hills.

It helps though. I live in the Netherlands and there's just as many fast food joints around as in the UK, but the population seems to be generally thinner, I'm sure it's because around here everyone cycles.
If I nip in to town for a bit of shopping, the time I'm likely to have some fast food, I burn about 500-600 calories doing it. A KFC zinger tower meal is about 1000 calories, so it's the equivalent a of a <500 calorie meal.
To burn 500-600 calories that’s a 30 minute ride, at good pace, each way. Many people just won’t five time to do that every day or even regularly.

Cycling, swimming, walking are great exercise and important but if you want to lose weight, ditching the junk food is the first thing.

Clearly there's no need to expend more calories if the intake of calories is reduced appropriately.

Less cake and pie going down the neck will do it.

obesity as a disease. Difficult situation, the UK/US culture is set up to over consume and oversell. LIke goose being packed with pellets, food is sold to humans that will trigger over consumption.

THe thing about the healthiest diets, Iceland has only 10/% processed food in their national diet. 90% is the same as it was pre-70s.

Yes of course, but you cant outrun eating crap and that has to come first (or at least above excercise).

Excercise should be done regardless of weight to be fair.

You can. But unless you really like running, or really like Mars bars, it's not worth it.

I do think that most severely underestimate their calorie intake - many even think that drinking full glasses of fruit juice is very healthy, not realising the sheer amount of sugar they are ingesting!

Until you start logging calories religiously and I mean EVERYTHING, I bet most people have no idea. It was certainly a ridiculous eye opener for me certainly.
